LECTURE 24         DOCTRINE OF FAITH: FAITH IN THE WORD OF GOD

Faith = Faith in the Word of God.

Heb. 11:9

By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a foreign {land,} dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise;

Acts 16:31

They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Faith is the result of regeneration.

Distinction between faith believing, and faith believed.
Faith as trustworthiness.

Pistis, pisteuo in the New Testament – use is not uniform.

Faith active vs. faith passive.  Passive sense = fidelity, believableness.

Gal. 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Rom. 3:3

What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?

Karth Barth: Faith = faithfulness on God.

— John Murray on Karl Barth: Murray, Commentary on Romans, Vol. 1, appendix.

Faith active as reliance and trust which we exercise. Fides qua.

Rom. 3:22

even {the} righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction,

Rom. 1:16-17

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

17 For in it {the} righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “BUT THE RIGHTEOUS {man} SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.”

Faith which is believed. Fides quae.

Jude 3

Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.

II Tim. 4:7

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.

Faith as creed.

Faith and Knowledge (fides generalis).
Faith – opinion – knowledge.

Little evidence – some evidence – full evidence.

Popularly, faith is not knowledge.

Credulous person believes without adequate evidence.

Some Christians believe there is substantial evidence, but also a measure of doubt.

This is where opinion stops and faith takes over.

This would mean that doubt is an essential element of faith, or where there is knowledge, there is no faith.

This is an ERRONEOUS VIEW.

Faith is knowledge.

I Peter 3:15

but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always {being} ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence;

— Always to be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope within you.

Jesus offered His hands and feet to Thomas.

Acts 1:3

To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over {a period of} forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.

— Jesus showed Himself alive by many convincing proofs.

— We are not asked to believe without evidence.

II Peter 1:19

{So} we have the prophetic word {made} more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.

— “We have the prophetic word which is more sure.”  Bebaios – reliable, verified.

— The Word of God is the most assuring.

— The Word of God is in consonance with evidence.  The Word is of a piece with evidences (Biblical notion of knowledge includes love).

II Tim. 1:12

For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.

I KNOW whom I have believed.

John 17:3

“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”

— This is life eternal, that they may KNOW you… and Jesus Christ

— We strive for an intelligible faith.

Faith is trust. (Cf. Warfield.)

The distinguishing feature of faith is trust.

Truth rules the usage of faith.

Object of faith is trustworthy.

Faith and the Bible. Fides generalis

Faith is directed to the words of Scripture.

John 2:22

So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

— The disciples believed the Scriptures and the word which Jesus spoke.

John 5:46-47

46 “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me.

47 “But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

— If you had believed Moses, you would have believed me.

— If you do not believe his writings, how can you believe me?

Acts 24:14

“But this I admit to you, that according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets.”

… believing everything written in the Old Testament

John 16:13

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.”

— Holy Spirit will guide disciples into all truth, so that they (apostles) may become organs of revelation.

Acts 17:11

Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily {to see} whether these things were so.

— Disciples in Berea compared Paul’s words with the Old Testament.

There is one faith which is directed to the Bible, and to Christ.

To receive the word = to receive Christ, and vice versa.

The Bible = Christ’s own testimony to Himself, or divine testimony to the Son.

Heb. 2:3-4

3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard,

4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

— Declared at first by the Lord, attested by those who heard Him, and God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His own will.

Westminster Confession of Faith, 14:2

By this faith, a Christian believes to be true whatever is revealed in the Word, because of the authority of God himself speaking in it(e).  He also responds differently to what eac particular passage contains – obeying the commands(f), trembling at the threatenings(g), and embracing the promises of God for this life and that which is to come(h).  But the principal acts of saving faith are accepting, receiving, and resting upon Christ alone for justification, sanctification, and eternal life, by virtue of the covenant of grace(i) .

— Only ONE faith which believes whatever the Scriptures teach, and has its focal point at resting in Christ for justification, sanctification, etc.  is saving faith.

(Principal acts of faith.)
