Lecture 34 SANCTIFICATION: GOAL OF SANCTIFICATION
Goal of Sanctification
Pattern of sanctification. Holiness of divine nature. Image of Christ.
I Peter 1:16
because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”
Leviticus 19:2
“Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.
Leviticus 20:7
‘You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, for I am the LORD your God.
Matt. 5:48
“Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
— Christ’s holiness.
Rom. 8:29
For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined {to become} conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;
Gal. 2:20
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the {life} which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
I Cor. 11:1
Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.
— This pattern is not limiting concept, a horizon to approach.
— This is a goal we will achieve.
— Perfection was ours in Adam.
— We have a beginning in history.
— If you lost the beginning, you also lost the end: cf. theology of “hope.”
— There is redemptive reality which we DO have.
— Eden is shot through with eschatology.
— Sabbath, pre-Fall, is eschatological (contemplates redemption).
Sin continues to indwell the believer throughout the life of the body.
Counter-evidence.
Once-for-all breach with sin (formal similarity with perfectionism).
John 3:6
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
No way to account for sin in man born of Spirit, if taken radically.
Series of texts describe believers in terms of perfection.
Hebrews 5:14
But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.
— Teleion.
I Cor. 2:6
Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away;
Phil. 3:15
Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you;
Examples of perfect persons.
Gen. 6:9
These are {the records of} the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God.
Job 1:1
There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil.
Psalm 18:20-24
20 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
21 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, And have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For all His ordinances were before me, And I did not put away His statutes from me.
23 I was also blameless with Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity.
24 Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in His eyes.
Psalm 26
1 Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity, And I have trusted in the LORD without wavering.
2 Examine me, O LORD, and try me; Test my mind and my heart.
3 For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes, And I have walked in Your truth.
4 I do not sit with deceitful men, Nor will I go with pretenders.
5 I hate the assembly of evildoers, And I will not sit with the wicked.
6 I shall wash my hands in innocence, And I will go about Your altar, O LORD,
7 That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving And declare all Your wonders.
8 O LORD, I love the habitation of Your house And the place where Your glory dwells.
9 Do not take my soul away {along} with sinners, Nor my life with men of bloodshed,
10 In whose hands is a wicked scheme, And whose right hand is full of bribes.
11 But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity; Redeem me, and be gracious to me.
12 My foot stands on a level place; In the congregations I shall bless the LORD.
Protestation of innocence
Efficacy of atonement.
Jesus not only cleanses outside of the cup, but purifies heart. Sin = anomaly. Never to be taken fro granted, as normal, to get used to, to be content with.
Refutation of counter-evidence.
— Relative perfection in Noah and Job.
— Sin as a truth not to be proclaimed gleefully: it is a sad truth.
Hodge III:246ff. – arguments 1, 5, 6 = one single argument from experience.
Mixed argument: main thesis drawn from Scripture, supplemented by experience.
Conclusion: I am not perfect.
This argument doesn’t prove that no man can be perfect in this life.
Argument 2 appeals to express declaration and general representation of Scripture.
I John 1:8
If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
— Hodge: verb is not in past tense.
— Shepherd: Present verb = not necessarily present expeience of writer.
— There is a general present.
Past tense does appear in I John 1:10
I John 1:10
If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.
— Won’t press argument form this tense.
— General purpose of the passage is not to show that believers are sinners, but that believers WERE sinners, but are not sinners any more.
— This is not to deny sin.
— But: Sin which characterizes our past lives have been dwelt with.
— But if we say we don’t need what Scripture says we need (Christ as Savior), we make God a liar.
— This doesn’t mean that I John denies there is sin in the believer.
I John 2:1
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;
— The focus of I John is antithesis of believers with those who are under the power of sin.
I John 3:4-5
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.
5 You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.
— Radical antithesis. Sin = a moral impossibility.
Moral impossibility is in new man. Not schizophrenia between new man and old
man.
