林牧师:we serve one Lord Jesus Christ

However our church is made up of many parts

It is easy to see that Chinese church in North America is made up of the English Speaking and the Chinese Speaking

林牧: what is a little bit more difficult to see is that the English speaking is made up of many parts

林牧:and the Chinese speaking part is made up of many parts as well

I will talk a little bit more about that later this morning

But as I was watching you coming into this room this morning

林牧: one of the first thing that I noticed is that we are running out of seats

林牧:so I would like to invite some of you who would like to do this, to seat on the stage, on this site, you are welcomed to come up

林牧:you can seat on the floor on the stage, come on up, or even though you are in the seats you are welcomed to do this, so that we will not have people standing at the back

Chinese Speaking adults are welcomed to do this as well

林牧:so you are welcomed on the stage and you’re welcomed seat on the floor near the stage if you like as well

For many years now we have been a family under the same roof

林牧:however very often we don’t really understand the members of our family

翻译:但是很多时候,我们对我们家里面各个成员都不太熟悉林牧:the Chinese church family is making up of many different kind of people,

林牧:our youth speaker is not Chinese for our conference this year,

林牧:and nor are many of our youth English workshop speakers

林牧:and if God so lead and bless us, my future daughter-in-law will not be Chinese

the purpose of English speaking ministry,we have an English speaking ministry in many churches

And the purpose of this English speaking ministry翻译:这个英文的事工

林牧:is to worship God

林牧:the purpose of the English ministry

林牧:is to teach the word of God

林牧:so that Christian can grow

林牧:just as Chinese ministry is the same

The purpose of English ministry is to spread the Gospel so people can come to know Jesus Christ

林牧:just like the Chinese speaking ministry does the same thing

林牧:the purpose of Chinese ministry is not to preserve the Chinese culture

林牧:nor is the purpose of the English ministry to preserve the Chinese culture

林牧:the purpose of the Chinese church is the same as the purpose of the church of Jesus Christ

林牧:it is the same as any other church, whether white, black, brown or yellow or red

林牧:now for most of us who came into this room this morning would probably feel a little bit, just a little bit uncomfortable

林牧:maybe the music made you uncomfortable

林牧:or for those of us to whom the music is comfortable, it sounds a little bit too traditionally, with some Chinese mixed in

林牧:well, ermm, the fact that you feel little bit uncomfortable, is the fact that you belong to a very large body of Christ which is the Chinese church in North America

林牧:for many years now, we have tried and learned to understand each other

林牧:some of us have not tried very hard to understand people who are different from us

林牧:some of us have been trying very hard to minister either on the Chinese side or on the English side

林牧:but then we find out that we are being misunderstood by the other side

林牧:it is sweet to trust in Jesus and to serve Jesus

林牧:but it is not so sweet to trust in the followers of Jesus

We face the 21st century with many challenges

林牧:and if we cannot learn to understand the other part of our church, we are going to have very a difficult time to be the representative of Jesus Christ in the 21st century

I’d like to speak to you this morning on the challenges we face in the 21st century

林牧:that I need your prayers

I’m going to ask my good friend, the English speaker Rev Ken Tom to come up and pray for me before I speak

林牧:this is the service of the entire church, not just the English side or the Chinese side

I would like to ask my brother Ken, Dr. Ken, to pray for me

Ken Tom: How grateful we are, O God

Ken Tom:in the house of the Lord

Ken Tom:we worship You as one family

Ken Tom:and above all else, O God,

Ken Tom:we delight in Your presence

Ken Tom:we welcome Your Holy Spirit

Ken Tom:come and minister to us

Ken Tom:Father, as we are quiet before You

Ken Tom:as our hearts are tenderized

Ken Tom:we pray that You will give us eyes to see

Ken Tom:ears to hear

Ken Tom:heart to feel

Ken Tom:and feet to walk in respond

Ken Tom:according to Your message

Ken Tom:We ask and pray, Holy Spirit

Ken Tom:for the anointing of the lip of Your servant

Ken Tom:We thank You God, for this Servant of God, Dr Samuel Ling,

Ken Tom:We thank You, O God, that You have given him the opportunity to share with us as an entire family

Ken Tom:We pray O God that Father

Ken Tom:that You will speak word through his mouth

Ken Tom:that Father that these are ideas that we need to hear and to respond to

Ken Tom:This is our great desire to see, O God

Ken Tom:that Your Chinese Church and Your Asian Church is not simply maintained

Ken Tom:but there will be a spiritual breakthrough

Ken Tom:in all the church work

Ken Tom:the extending of the Gospel

Ken Tom:and so O God that I pray the Spirit of God not only anoint Your servant Dr Samuel Ling

Ken Tom:but empower him with Your Spirit

Ken Tom:and Lord, speak through him so that we have ears to hear, eyes to see

Ken Tom:we thank You so much for the ministering presence of Your Holy Spirit

Ken Tom:In Jesus’ Name

Ken has been ministering in Asian ministries for 25 years, more than that, maybe 30 years, counting when the time you were still a lay Christian working in some CBS TV studio New York City a long time ago

林牧:you are now a servant of God to enable and facilitate many English-speaking ministries in Asian churches, if I understand correctly

林牧:it is not very often that the Chinese-speaking churches get to know somebody who is not only English-speaking, but has been working with English-speaking ministry for many many years

林牧:so I’d like to ask you to tell us what you want to say from your heart to the Chinese-speaking church in 30 seconds, no, actually you have more than 30 seconds翻译:所以我希望你现在利用短短的时间可以跟我们分享一下,就是在那些主要以华语为主的教会里面,中国人教会里面

林牧:the Chinese-speaking side needs to hear some of the things that are coming from the English-speaking side

林牧:in the last 30 years, we have not done a very good job to listen and to understand

Now Jesus Christ is the head of one Church, but we don’t really understand very well the other part of our church

林牧:actually we have more than  two 部门

翻译:there are more than two sections,

林牧:and because we don’t do a very good job of listening

林牧:unintentionally or intentionally, we have injured our brothers and sisters

林牧:the Chinese side feel that the English side don’t have any manners

林牧: sometimes the English side feel that the Chinese side only have willpower and no heart

林牧:so Ken, what would you like to say to the Chinese church?

林牧:well, I’m talking because I want to give him time to think. But you have before you a very experienced servant of God and he has some important things that he has been thinking, praying and sharing for many years

His ministry is called The Vision Quest,

So, what are some of the most important things the Chinese church needs to hear, Ken?

Ken Tom:Sam and I go back a long way from the Jesus Movement days of the 1970s

Ken Tom:This is probably a surprise to me

Ken Tom:but I am delighted to have an opportunity to share briefly with you。

Ken Tom:with fear and trembling

Ken Tom: that I’ll share maybe a few things that I think are important

Ken Tom:I am an ABC

Ken Tom:I was born in the USA

Ken Tom:I’m an ABC pastor

Ken Tom:my hair is full of grey hue

Ken Tom:I use ? (Grecian blue?)  (0:17:19)

Ken Tom:I love all people but because God borne me as a Chinese person in America

Ken Tom:When Sam and I were young men in New York

Ken Tom:and we like to think that our wives think about their ? young men (0:18:23)

Ken Tom:we were part of the Jesus Movement that was in America, that was sweeping the nation in the 60s

Jesus movement,

Ken Tom:and we swore aspirations to veer Jesus Movement within our Chinese community, start off in the New York area。

Ken Tom:As for us, that catches our imagination to be able to devote ourselves to the Lord and to pursue full-time Christian ministry.

Ken Tom:But you know it’s not easy to pursue that route.

Ken Tom:my parents love me

Ken Tom:and they love me so much

Ken Tom:you can be a doctor

Ken Tom:you can be a lawyer

Ken Tom: an engineer

Ken Tom:but being a minister?

Ken Tom:Oh, no!

Ken Tom:Now maybe it’s because that the Chinese Americans, they have large families

Ken Tom:I’m number 8

Ken Tom:so you can see that the generation of American-born Chinese before me

Ken Tom:so maybe my momma got too tired of, you know, scolding the children

Ken Tom:so when I shared with her my aspiration to serve God

Ken Tom:Reluctantly

Ken Tom:she allowed me to attend seminary

Ken Tom:and, you know, I had no model

Ken Tom:I just love God

Ken Tom:I just want to serve God

Ken Tom:because I have a youth ministry

Ken Tom:it was not as large as this church here

Ken Tom:but under my ministering we began with four

Ken Tom:and that was a great start! Youth group- four!

Ken Tom:And the next year God blessed mildly, eight!

Ken Tom:And then the next year even more wonderfully, sixteen!

Ken Tom:and then after that, the fourth year, forty

Ken Tom:It’s not so much about numbers, or anything, but it shows that young people

Ken Tom:they love God

Ken Tom: but you know I realized that they, I have my limitations

Ken Tom:So, to be able to see that they would grow

Ken Tom:I need to grow with them

Ken Tom:And so, I did not see myself as a pastor — there was no Chinese American, ABC pastor

Ken Tom:so we went to the nearby seminary which at that time we call the Aligned ? of Theology

Ken Tom:And so we came back, and, to minister to that group

Ken Tom:I never thought of myself as a pastor

Ken Tom:I still don’t

Ken Tom:And yet 25 years later

Ken Tom:I serve as an advisory pastor in two churches

Ken Tom:But the thing that, that is important for me

Ken Tom:even at this conference

Ken Tom: I thank God that they’ve put me in this hotel facility

Ken Tom:and in this hotel facility, and I thank you for…, okay, I am spoiled, but keep on doing it

Ken Tom:There is an open area

Ken Tom:and on a particular first night

Ken Tom: when I had only two hours of sleep

Ken Tom:I could not believe my eyes, how many young people were in that area

Ken Tom:And I could not believe how much lack of sleep I had

Ken Tom:but it was exciting

Ken Tom:for that night, at least…just for that night

Ken Tom:because I can’t think

Ken Tom:this is the future, how exciting!

Ken Tom:The vibrancy of their faith

Ken Tom:I looked at these guys and said: Lord, who is going to pastor these kids?

Ken Tom:Are there going to be churches… to help them to develop and to ? believers of Jesus Christ (0:23:56)

Ken Tom:And now with the few people in the English ministry group, I may have been questioned

Ken Tom:I’m an old man now

Ken Tom:one year older than I am, hahaha, I have not much hair anymore

Ken Tom:But the generation that I see and love

Ken Tom:there aren’t, either the pastors or the churches, to accommodate their growth

Ken Tom:That’s my number one concern

Ken Tom:Our children, at this age

Ken Tom:it’s so great a thrill, as in John, to know that my children walk with God(0:25:30)

Ken Tom:It’s wonderful that they have youth group to fellowship

Ken Tom:but will they have a structured, will there be a structured church to ? these young people who will eventually grow up, being teenagers (0:25:46)

Ken Tom:They would grow up to be college students(0:26:06)

Ken Tom:and young career people

Ken Tom:and have families

Ken Tom:and have children of their own

Ken Tom:And so, in my role

Ken Tom:of Vision Quest,

Ken Tom:it has been simply a ministry to come alongside of our Chinese churches

Ken Tom:Do not tell them how to do English ministries

Ken Tom:but when you look at the young people

Ken Tom:and you project their future

Ken Tom:that one day, that these young people’s group is going to become mature young people

Ken Tom:and they’re going to need a very different ministry in a very different structure

Ken Tom:that may not be comfortable at ?(0:27:15)林牧:对你来说可能不舒服的,

Ken Tom:and so, (0:27:21)

Ken Tom:if you love this generation, and I know, how many Chinese parents do not love their children?

Ken Tom:is that you think about this generation you think: “ how can I make, how can our Chinese church ? intentional for their future?”  (0:27:42)

Ken Tom:and we begin with vision

Ken Tom:and that’s why Vision Quest is called Vision Quest

Ken Tom:to help our Chinese churches arm their vision on their quest in English ministries

Ken Tom:You know I wish that, I wish I grew up with Jewish people most of my life

Ken Tom:and so timidly I share that I’m a Chinese Jew for Jesus

Ken Tom:and I know that as I minister

Ken Tom:God has been very gracious to me

Ken Tom:He’d allowed me to visit many congregations particularly in the tri-state(0:29:12)

Ken Tom:to share this important message

Ken Tom:When you think about this generation

Ken Tom: do you envision an intentional ministry?

Ken Tom:Someone like myself

Ken Tom:does not intend to be a troublemaker

Ken Tom:I’m really a nice guy

Ken Tom:my children may not think so

Ken Tom:but I am a nice guy!

Ken Tom:So, I’m not a troublemaker

Ken Tom:I’m a trouble soother

Ken Tom: So, that is my aspiration, that as a ?  missionary(0:30:20)

Ken Tom:to help our Chinese churches grow to the next step of development

Ken Tom:Sam and I are 50

Ken Tom:When we were young men in our 20s

Ken Tom:there was an organization called Faith

Ken Tom:Faith. And this organization advocated for English ministry development

Ken Tom:But many of those men, who ? were senior ABC pastors(0:31:07)

Ken Tom:and if they were smart, and they were smart

Ken Tom:they stayed on the West Coast

Ken Tom:But it was ten years ago

Ken Tom:after I finished my training at Dallas Seminary 林牧:当我在Dallas(达拉斯)神学院毕业的时候

Ken Tom:God called me back

Ken Tom: to New York

Ken Tom:and gave me the vision

Ken Tom:but not only to come back for the tri-state region

Ken Tom:but for the East Coast as well

Ken Tom:English ministries development on the East Coast

Ken Tom:is very limited

Ken Tom:compared to the West Coast

Ken Tom:The reason why I’m here this weekend

Ken Tom:is through the graciousness of Dr. ?(0:32:17)

Ken Tom:and I am excited to have the opportunity to be here to meet most of you who are in the mid-Atlantic area

Ken Tom:I’d like to encourage you

Ken Tom:my ministry is a ministry of encouragement

Ken Tom:this is definitely what we do

Ken Tom:to be able to reassure our Chinese churches that English ministry is not trying to split the church

Ken Tom:but being intentional in the development

Ken Tom: See, when they grow up, you know, they grow up fast.

Ken Tom:Sometimes we want to keep them with us

Ken Tom:forever

Ken Tom:and we will when we get to heaven

Ken Tom:But someone wants heaven on earth

Ken Tom:but they need to be empowered

Ken Tom:to reach their own generation

Ken Tom:to start their own churches

Ken Tom:(0:33:45)

Ken Tom:to start their own churches

Ken Tom: I’m an old guy

Ken Tom:but you know I yearn to see that there will be a new generation leadership, so that when Sam and I are retired

Ken Tom:which is pretty soon

Ken Tom:and then you won’t have to listen to our jokes

Ken Tom:but there will be a newer generation

Ken Tom:they’ll be able to minister to you

Ken Tom: and to your grandchildren

Ken Tom:And this weekend

Ken Tom:(0:34:28)

林牧:Thank you, Ken(掌声)
