I’m not an ABC pastor but I am a voice in the Chinese church for ABC ministry我不是一个ABC 牧师,但是我是华语教会里面倡导ABC 事工的。 I’d like to give Ken a book that I have done, basically a collection of my essays which is about ABC. This book is not for ABC readers, but it’s about ABC. Just to let you know that you’re not alone. Thanks, Sam. I want you to know that Sam is a gifted servant of God of rich ? for us. And I want you to know that when I do ? in transition, in helping our churches to make a change for better, is that I use a lot of Sam’s work.

So, thanks, Sam!

You need vision, hahahaha.

The 21st century is here

The 21st century has been with us for 12 years now

As historians date century, the 20th century began in 1914

林牧:– the beginning of World War 1

林牧:and the period of the 20th century has been a period of horror and terror

林牧:and it ended roughly in the year 1989 with collapse of the Berlin wall and June 4 Tiananmen Square

林牧:for many of us Chinese-speaking Christians in the Chinese church

林牧:much of our thinking has remained in the 1937 to (19)49 period

林牧:or at best in the 1965 to (19)79 period

I am also an encourager in the Chinese church like Ken Tom

I want to tell you about the different kinds of people I meet

林牧:and I want to tell you that who is going to lead the Chinese church in the 21st century

I will be speaking on the same topic this afternoon at one o’clock, “Who Will Be Leading The Chinese Church in the 21st Century?”

It will not be those of us who came to America in 1970 with 20 dollars in our pockets and wash dishes in a dormitory of a Texas state university

林牧:probably also not those ? Chinese students who received Christ between the years 1990 and 2000

In the year 2016, I will legally retire

林牧:so, my ministry is called “China Horizon”.

The original name was “China Vision”

But unfortunately some Vancouver TV station has taken that name, so we couldn’t use that name.

The vision of “China Horizon”

林牧:is two-fold.

Number one:

林牧:will the Chinese church continue to believe in the Bible as the Word of God?

In the year 2020, will the Chinese church still believe the Bible as the inspired Word of God, the inerrant Word of God?

If we look at the Chinese church on the English side and the Chinese side, that likelihood is getting dimmer and dimmer by the day

But we’re OBCs or ABCs, immigrants or second-generation, we’re losing our confidence in the Bible as the inspired Word of God

When we come to worship God on Sunday

林牧:we like to feel good and be blessed(0:40:36)

We want somebody to feel our pain that we’ve felt the previous week

林牧:and we want to be told three things we can do this week, how to communicate better as a husband or as a wife翻译:我们希望能够在这边讲台上面对我们讲说,这个礼拜有三样事情可以作了,作一个比较好一点的丈夫,

All of that is good

林牧:but what happens is that pastors get busy feeding you these stuff

林牧:so the pastor goes to get advanced training and get a doctor in ministry

Their professors tell them to do two things

林牧:one, tell stories in your sermons

林牧:because the Bible is a story, a narrative

And the second thing is to advertise your church

So, in advanced training, the pastor receiving, they are not given more grounding in the Word of God, by and large

Everywhere I go, I meet wonderful laymen and laywomen who are hungry for the Word of God

The second vision of China Horizon

林牧:and that is to ask a question

林牧:who will lead the Chinese church in the year 2020 ?

How old will you be, young people, in the year 2020?

Add 19 to your present age, about what? 40? 30? 40? You will be running our nation’s companies at that time

林牧:you will be associate professors and doctors on the staff of hospitals

林牧:you will be a middle management, and you will be running the churches as deacons and pastors in the Chinese churches

Some of you will be serving as board members in American mission organizations as some of your forebears or ? are already doing(0:43:31)

So, for a few minutes I want to give you a few snapshots, photographs

林牧:because the Chinese church very seldom sees who will be leading the church in the year 2020

Now, the problem is many of those who should be leading the church in the year 2020 are leaving the Chinese church today,  every week

Let me repeat, every week, somebody is leaving the Chinese church,

林牧:very week, somebody is leaving the Chinese church in the USA

Sure, many people are coming in the front door,  but many are leaving the back door

Every week , somebody is leaving the Chinese church in Singapore

林牧:and every week, somebody is leaving the Chinese church in Hong Kong

But I want to show you some of the photographs that I have taken in my mind

I’ll start with Singapore

I want to share with you, American-born Chinese young adults, that you are not alone

In this country, you are a minority within a minority.

However, you are already making great efforts to mainstream into the main culture

The main speaker for ? was a Chinese American(0:45:36)

But there’s a country called Singapore which is an English-speaking country

And so, the churches that are English-speaking are larger than the churches that are Chinese-speaking in Singapore

And there are more English churches than Chinese churches

And in the country of Indonesia,

林牧:- I’ve been to these countries just a few months ago –翻译:在过去几个月我就已经到那边去探访过他们,

林牧:the Indonesian-speaking Chinese churches are bigger than the Chinese-speaking Chinese churches.

I was on the plane flying from Singapore to East Malaysia.

I was seating on the aisle seat

林牧:and then there were two men, window and middle seat翻译:然后在当中过去有两个人,

And somehow, I noticed that one of them, probably, is a Christian.

The young man by the window is 22 years old, sorry,  24 years old

He has just finished studying for 12 years in Australia

And has now returned to East Malaysia

He’s now the chief executive of six companies that his family holds

林牧:and I happen to be staying in a hotel that he runs

林牧:and he has just become a Christian 6 months before that

翻译:他这个人就是在还没有回去以前的六个月,刚刚接受了主,林牧:and is already thinking about starting an orphanage in his country, where there are many orphans

What kind of difference will he make in the Asian economy as a Christian?

So, the ABCs, I want to share to you, there are brothers and sisters that you have around the world in the body of Christ

林牧:and if God gives you the opportunity, it’ll be wonderful  for you to meet some of your brothers and sisters in Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Sydney

林牧:because there is an English-speaking or non-Chinese-speaking Chinese leadership God has been raising in Hong Kong, Singapore, England and Australia and places like that 翻译:因为在海外、在香港、马来西亚、纽西兰,有一些是、不是讲中文的中国人被神提拔起来,愿意作将来的领导,

There are now about 12 to 15 Australian-born Chinese pastors in Australia

Now, let’s go back to Singapore

I will be spending three and a half weeks in Singapore this summer

Last year I have spent 50 days in Singapore

We did public lectures that are held with the cooperation of 15 pastors

I was there for 50 days

I think I’ve spoke about 200 times, I don’t remember how many times

And the pastors saw that the Chinese-speaking church is a minority in Singapore

林牧:the Chinese- speaking church is a minority ,

The English-speaking Chinese church is the majority

So when I go to Singapore

I switch roles

I serve the minority

林牧:and they’re losing their young adults because their young adults work in the computer world

Today, we can alter the genes of babies

15 of them were just born one month ago

So in the year 2020

林牧:you people will be evangelizing people whose genes have been altered, by hundreds and thousands

翻译:你们可能就会面对这些,他们的遗传因子已经改变过的人,林牧:so my point is that in the 21st century, who’s going to lead the Chinese church?

It will be the layperson.

The layperson is multicultural

Who will lead the Chinese church in the 21st century?

The pastors and the elders and deacons

林牧:just like many of the children from people in India don’t speak Hindi

The point is that to be a witness for Jesus Christ in the 21st century

林牧:you need to learn how to be salt and light in an effective way in the marketplace

Many of you will be serving, I mean, in your secular jobs, so called secular jobs, in Asia in the year 2020

That’s why it’s important to learn Mandarin

I’m not trying to roll the clock back and say you must learn the traditional culture, that’s not the purpose

Rather, according to Megatrends Asia by John Naisbitt亚洲大趋势,

Asia is the most strategic region, economically speaking, in the world

But the problem is that the Chinese church has not trained our laypeople how to be salt and light in the world, in the workplace

Let’s turn our Bibles, open to Luke chapter 5

Jesus Christ is Lord of our workplace,

Is He the Lord of your career?

Or rather, do you understand and recognize Him as the Lord of your line of work, your occupation, your profession?

In Luke chapter 5, we have a very familiar story

Let me summarize it for you

Simon first met Jesus in chapter 4

Jesus healed his mother-in-law

So Simon already knew Jesus as a healer

And the second time Simon met Jesus is in chapter 5 verses 1 and 2

In verse 1 and 2, Jesus is the guest preacher

Jesus wanted to use Simon’s boat as a podium and a platform to preach

And so, now Simon, his boat is on downtime, so no problem for Jesus to use his boat

The third encounter Simon had with Jesus

林牧:in verse 4

Jesus said: “Let’s go fishing,”

Jesus is no longer the spiritual preacher or the healer anymore

You see, now Jesus comes into Simon’s field of expertise

Jesus was the son of a carpenter

林牧:and a Rabbi or a guest preacher in town

Simon is the expert fisherman

So Simon must have thought:

林牧:daytime is the wrong time to fish

林牧:number two

林牧:last night I’ve been there, there was no fish in the lake翻译:昨天晚上我打了一个晚上,没有打到什么鱼,

林牧:number three

林牧:don’t you see that I’m tired?

However, since you are a Chinese guest pastor

I will be very Chinese and 客气 and will go fishing with you

What happened, as a result?

Every fish in the lake jumped into the net!

Now, let’s not jump to the so called spiritual lesson first, OK?

I know what you’re thinking

I will make you fishers of men, right?

What is fish to a fisherman?

It’s money

They got rich that day

That’s why Simon’s friends were amazed

But Simon bowed down and said: “ Depart from me, Lord, for I’m a sinner.”

This is his fourth encounter with Jesus

Not a healer

Not a guest preacher

Not just an interferer into his world of fishing

This interferer turns out to be the Lord who created the fish

Jesus created the fish

林牧:therefore He is the Lord of both the fishes and the Lord of fishing

For many years now, Chinese Christians have been living a fragmented existence

There’s one part of our lives that we devote to work翻译:有一部分作为我们的工作,

林牧:it goes from 9 o’clock in the morning

林牧:to about 8 o’clock at night, if you live in Singapore

If it’s in Seattle, it goes to about 11pm

And then there is a private world, that’s the second world

林牧:that’s a private world

For example, when somebody asks you out for lunch or dinner

林牧:if somebody invites you

林牧:you usually say: “Let’s see now, I’m not free this week. How about next Tuesday?”

Actually you’re free this week, you know

But we have a concept of privacy

And then the third world is the world that we give, so called, to God

The 21st century needs Christian in the marketplace, in China as well as everywhere else in the world

What the world needs is to see more real Christians be salt and light in the marketplace

But today, for a few minutes, I want to give you the doctrine of foundation: how, not how, but why, we should be salt and light in the marketplace.

So I want you to listen very carefully for the next 5 minutes

Who is Jesus Christ?

Our traditional understanding

林牧:is that Jesus died for us

林牧:and He rose from the dead

We’ve been explaining the book of Romans here in the Chinese side. We’ve been studying the book of Romans here

So, we’re not going to do that this morning

Jesus rose from the dead and He gave the Great Commission — to preach the gospel

Who is this Jesus who gave us the Great Commission?

This Jesus is called the second Adam in 1 Corinthians chapter 15

Who’s Adam?

God gave Adam a job to do

林牧:to take care of the world

林牧:to manage the world for God’s glory

Adam failed

林牧:so God sent a second Adam

Jesus is the second Adam

The second Adam did several things

Most of us know that the second Adam died for our sins, rose from the dead and gave us the Great Commission翻译:很多人都知道这个,第二个亚当为我们的罪死了,复活了,并且给了我们一个大使命,

But the second Adam came to do what the first Adam failed to do

And so Jesus is the second Adam who is the perfect man

He understood the weaknesses of men and women

林牧:but He also came to fulfill Adam’s mandate to take care of the world

However, this second Adam is not just some social reformer or businessman

林牧:nor a businessman nor a politician

This second Adam is the one who died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead and gave us the Great Commission

林牧:and of course, this second Adam is none other than the God who made the universe

How many second Adams are there?

林牧:only one

There’s only one Jesus

Let me repeat

Jesus is God

Jesus came to complete what Adam failed to do

林牧:that is, Jesus is the perfect example of how to take care of the world

And so, your job has meaning because Jesus is the perfect worker

Science has meaning because Adam was supposed to understand the universe

So, Adam was the perfect scientist before he sinned

But because of sin, sin has affected our minds

And that is why every field, every profession has been tainted by sin

Now, the second Adam has come
