各位弟兄姐妹,我们这个系列是来研读这本小书,小可是不简单的,丰富的书,Called to the ministry, by Edmund P. Clowney, 中文是克罗尼博士所写的:《天命与你》蒙召服侍,严格来说是蒙召传道。在这个系列里面,首先我会花一点时间来解释,为什么读《天命与你》?
Brothers and sisters,we are studying the book Called to the ministry, by Edmund P. Clowney, and in the befinning, we will spend some time dealing the question why study this book Called to the ministry.
Many Christian are serving in the church today.今天有很多基督徒在教会里侍奉的。They form the “core”/”nucleus” of the church.他们是教会的核心同工。Although many are involved in ministry/service, there may or may not be a true sense of unity or cohesion among these coworkers. 虽然很多人参与侍奉,但是教会里有些同工之间,可能有或者可能没有一种的凝聚力。A heart for unity may be strong or weak.合而为一、合一的心可能强,可能不强。Let’s have s look at some of these Chriatians so called “reasons” or “motives” for serving in a church.我们来看一看这些基督徒服侍的原因或者是动机。
No.1 第一:A very common phenomenon is: 有一个非常常见的现象,是什么呢?Christians serve because they have been recruited/drafted by the pastor, elders or other leaders in the church. 基督徒服侍是因为牧师长老或者其他的教会领袖征募他.And they are willing to serve. 而他们自己也愿意侍奉。So this is how they began to serve. 就是这样,就开始侍奉了。And they keep doing it for years.多年来就继续是如此。
No.2 第二:There are also many Christians who serve, because they are so “moved.” 又有很多基督徒说,他们有这种的感动,They have a “burden” to serve. 他们有这样的负担,因此就这样侍奉了。This sense of “being moved” is what they mean, when they say they are “called” to serve.这个感动就是他们所谓的呼召,就是他们的呼召,他们说有呼召的时候,主要是指这个感动。There really isn’t a biblical basis for it; 这种的感动不一定有什么圣经根据;it comes from their heart/experience.乃是来自他们内心的他们自己的经历的。
No. 3 第三:Other Christians say that, 又有一些基督徒说,as long as you have “a good relationship with the Lord” (i.e., pray and read the Word of God regularly), you can serve. 只要你与主耶稣有好的关系,意思就是说,经常的读经祷告,就可以侍奉了。
Another way of putting it is: 或者这样来说:Don’t serve unless you have a good relationship with the Lord.除非你与主耶稣有良好的关系,不然你不要侍奉。
As if they say: 意思好像是说:Other than a regular devotional life, there aren’t any other prerequisites/requirements for those who serve. 好像在说除了有正常的灵修生活以外,就没有其他的先决条件,就没有其他的侍奉先决条件了。
Brother and sisters,弟兄姐妹,We need to re-learn, in a fresh way: What is God’s calling? What is our Lord Jesus’ calling? 我们需要重新的学习,什么是上帝的呼召,what is our Lord Jesus’ calling. 什么是主耶稣基督的呼召。
Is God’s calling the same as our decision, including at some special conference? 呼召是不是我们所做的决志呢?在某某特会里面所做的决志奉献自己呢?Or is it the same as a decision we make at some crisis point in life在我们人生面对一个危机时刻的时候所经历到的呢? Perhaps you have laid off, 可能你失业了,or you experienced a tremendous illness或者你大病一场,then you dedicate your life to serve God in some way, 可能你就奉献自己,这些都是好事,these are all good things. 我们应该有决志,是好事,在危机里面上帝往往会、的确会呼召我们。We should make such decisions and …through these cricis. We need a fresh sense, a biblical basis for God’ call 但是我们需要重新建立一种的呼召的概念,我们需要从圣经去建立神对我们的呼召的认识– so that our service isn’t merely based on our own burden, our own experience, or someone else’s recruitment.–好叫我们的侍奉不仅仅是建立在自己的负担,自己某某的感动或者经历,不仅仅是因为别人来征募我们的。
If all of us learn a Biblical doctrine of calling, 假如我们大家都一起来学习一个圣经的呼召论呼召观,and at the same time seek a call which comes from God, 同时我们大家也都追求一种从上帝而来的呼召,then our service will grow to become more solid, 那么我们的侍奉会变得更加的扎实,and can much better stand the test of time/suffering. 也更加能够经得起时间的考验、熬炼的考验。And the church will be more united – truly united.教会也会更加的真正的合一。
The unity of the church is not build on some marketing tool of goal setting and mobilization.教会的合一并不是透过一些市场学的伎俩,来建立一些的目标,然后总动员。不是的!No, the church’s unity is based on truth. 教会的合一是建立在真理上,and in terms of service, 那么从侍奉的角度来看,the church’s unity among those who serve is based on God’s call. 教会服侍的人员,他们之间的合一,是建立在上帝的呼召,这个真理上的。
好了,现在我们来看一看这本书Called to the Minisrty的本质的性质和写作背景, Now let us see the NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF THIS BOOK Called to the Minisrty. Because of these reasons we outlined above, this is why we come to study the book. 就因为我们上面提出各种的理由,因此我们来研读这本克罗尼博士写的《天命与你》。
This book was originally written for those Christian brothers, who are willing to consider whether God has called them to enter the ministry of the gospel. 这本书本来是写给那些愿意考虑上帝有没有呼召他们做传道人、牧师的这种的基督徒弟兄们的。During my university and seminary years, 当我做大学生和神学生的年代,就是60—70年代,that was in 1960s and 70s, Westminster Theological Seminary would often send a free copy to a Christian who was considering to apply to the seminary. 威敏斯特神学院往往会寄一本作为礼物送给那些愿意考虑申请就读威敏斯特的信徒们的。Even though this is the case, 虽然说是写给愿意接受呼召做牧师做神学生的信徒写的,but when you read on,但是当你读下去的时候, 你会发现, you will discover that the majority of the content of the book is suitable for all Christians who want to serve the Lord, or who are considering it 你会发现其实书里面大部分的内容其实都是适合从事侍奉或者愿意侍奉的基督徒阅读的, – it is still worthy of our study and meditation. –非常值得我们去研究,然后心里面反复思想。
Now let us look at the TITLE OF THE BOOK; A NOTE ABOUT TERMINOLOGY首先我们来看一看这本书的书名的说明,然后这里有一个关于词汇字眼的说明。Note. In English, a pastor is traditionally called a “minister” or “minister of the gospel.” 英文讲到一个人做传道人的时候,往往是叫他做minister,The “office” or position of a pastor/preacher is called “the ministry of the gospel,” or in short, “the ministry.”那么牧师传道人的职分, 英文一般称为the ministry of the Gospel ,或者短称the ministry。
还没有讲下去之前,你会看到这些the ministry这个字,往往也是官员、或者臣仆的意思,在政府里面,从圣经的概念借过去的。有冠词的the ministry 是特别指『传道事⼯』,或『传道/牧师的职分』。若没有冠词,就是ministry ,这个字可以⽤来指⼀般的,或各种的事奉,事⼯。 This term “the ministry” with the article “the” refers to the office of the pastor/preacher. 有冠词的,有the的,是指牧师或者传道事工,或者牧师,或者传道的职分,If the word “ministry” stands alone without the article “the,” 假如没有冠词,只有单独一个字的话,it can refer to all kinds of (other) ministries. 它就会指各种其他的侍奉跟事工的。
The title of this book is Called to the Ministry.这本书的书名是Called to the Ministry,the ministry. In other words, the solemn subject matter which the book deals with, is 因此,这本书所处理的一个严肃的内容的问题就是,the office of the pastor/preacher, the minister of the gospel. 就是蒙召承担牧师/传道者的讲道者的职分,是讨论这个的严肃的问题的。

Now let us look at the auther of the book. 现在我们来介绍一下这本书的作者:BIBLICAL THEOLOGIAN FOR THE CHURCH为教会做圣经神学家的克罗尼Edmand P. Clowney.The author was a professor of practical theology when I was a student. 当我做神学生的时候,克罗尼博士是实践神学的教授,of course he was the president。他也是院长。He taught us the Doctrine of the Church 他是教导我们教会论的,and many other courses, e.g. 很多其他的实际侍奉方面的课程,such as missions and Christian education and so on. 包括宣教学/基督教教育等等.
There is also a first-year, one-semester course另外有一个第一年一个学期的课程,the ministry of the Word就是传道的职分,或者讲道者、牧师的职分,ministry of the Word。内容大概就是与这本书相关的。But our seminary is very different from other schools. 可是我们这间神学院与其他的神学院非常的不同,其中一点是,our classes in Practical Theology has a very strong “biblical theology” foundation. 我们的实践神学有很丰厚的圣经基础。not just courses on methods不是教你技巧而已的。A good bit is due to the work of President Clowney.大部分是归功于克罗尼院长努力的。
Let us introduce some of Dr. Clowney’s books, 我们来介绍一下克罗尼博士他所著作的书籍。The Doctrine of the Church (IVP). 首先,教会论或者教会。这本书呢,中文的翻译是有电子版,在改革宗翻译社美国的网站上有电子版。What does this book deal with? 这本书是讲什么的呢?How does the Bible view the church? 圣经是怎么看教会的? He approaches it from the three persons of the Trinity, 作者是从三位一体,三个位格,圣父、圣子、圣灵来看的,and moves from the Old Testament to the New Testament. 一直从旧约圣经讲到新约圣经的。教会是什么呢?The church is the people whom God has called to himself; 教会是上帝所呼召来归属于他的子民,the church is the Body and the Temple of Christ; 圣经教会是基督的身体,是基督的圣殿,the church is the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. 教会是圣灵所设立的团契。Very rich biblical material. 丰富的圣经内容的。
Dr. Clownsy also wrote a popular-level adult Sunday school text book克罗尼博士也写了一本平信徒看的成年主日学的教科书,entitled Living in Christ’s Church . 这本书我给他一个中文的书名,《教会论与教会生活》有网上的视频的。(Published by Great Commission, www.gcp.org大使命出版社所出版,网站是gcp.org). In fact, many of GCP’s Sunday School textbooks/curricula are based on Dr. Clowney’s doctrine of the church and his biblical theology.
事实上大使命出版社所出版的很多不同年龄层的教材都建立在克罗尼博士的圣经神学和他的教会论的基础上。
Another book written by Dr. Clowney 另外一本克罗尼博士所写的书,Preaching and Biblical Theology. 讲道与圣经神学。(这本书已经有台北改革宗出版社出版了)This book studies the concept of “the Word of God” in the Bible. 这本书是研究圣经怎么看神的话 “the Word of God” 神的话这个概念的。God’s Word is his sovereign, authoritative word: 神的话是祂的权威性的、作为主宰讲的话:how does God speak? 圣经说上帝是怎么说话的呢?And how should it affect our preaching? 这个又应该怎么样影响我们的讲道的呢?So it is a book which contend biblical theology, 因此这本书的内容完全又是圣经神学, In order to establish the authority in preaching为的是要建立讲道者讲道的权威.
And the other book he wrote is The Unfolding Mystery: Discovering Christ in the Old Testament. 另外一本就是《解开奥秘》,从旧约发现基督(P&R, www.prpbooks.com.) As the title indicates, 书名就顾名思义,the Old Testament teaches us about Jesus Christ! 旧约圣经是讲耶稣基督的!Clowney shows this from the people Old Testament and the periods of the Old Testament: 克罗尼从旧约的不同的人物来讲教会,也是从旧约不同的时期来讲:
Adam before he sinned; 亚当犯罪之前;Adam after he sinned; 亚当犯罪之后;Abraham; Jacob; Moses; etc. 亚伯拉罕、雅各、摩西等等。A rich little book 这本是一本小小的丰富的书,on the promises, prophecies, and most importantly the “types” of Old Testament.充满着旧约的应许、旧约的预言、特别是旧约的预表。
Dr. Clownsy also gave a series of biblical expository messages at the IFMA EFMA biennial convention at Winona Lake, Indiana; around 1970.大概就是1970、1971年的时候,克罗尼博士在印第安纳州曾经发表过一系列的解经讲道,就是为了美国福音派很多非宗派,或者福音派宗派的差会的联会的大会讲解的,in those adresses, by the way, they are including the book Creative Tension in Missions. 这本书里面搜集了克罗尼的讲章,这本书的书名是Creative Tension in Missions, edited by Peter Wagner, ed., 这些讲章,就是从侍奉跟宣教的角度来讲圣经的圣经神学。These adresses are also biblical theology except focus on ministry and mission.And of course, the book held in your hand: Called to the Ministry. 当然,还有我们手中这本《天命与你》。
So Dr. Clowney used the biblical theology method to explain what is the church, what is “the Word of God,” what is “God’s calling,” “who is Jesus Christ.” what is it mean to be in ministry and “missions”? 所以克罗尼博士从整本圣经的圣经神学来看,教会是什么?神的话是什么?讲道是什么?侍奉是什么?宣教是什么?神的呼召是什么?耶稣基督是谁?等等。
圣经神学 BIBLICAL THEOLOGY
At this point you may ask: What is this “biblical theology,” of which Dr. Clowney is an expert teacher? 讲到这里你可能会问了:克罗尼博士的专长,他所讲的是不是圣经神学?圣经神学是什么东西来的呢?May I explain this very briefly and simply.让我简单的概要的来解释一下。
Biblical theology is a method of interpreting the Bible, 圣经神学是一个解释圣经的方法,which looks at the ENTIRE history of the Bible, 他是从整本圣经的历史来看圣经的,the whole process of revelation and the whole process of redemption. 圣经里面整个的上帝启示的历史,圣经里面整个的上帝救赎的历史,从这个角度来解释圣经。Interpreting the Bible from the ENTIRE revelation history and the history redemption.
In this method, it will see continuity between the earlier and the later; but also discontinuity or progression(difference, contrast). 它会看到,圣经从前面到后面会有它的合一性、延续性,也有它的进展性,也有断层。In any case, it will see that the focus and the center of the Bible is Jesus Christ. 总之,这种的方法会看到圣经的中心人物,焦点是耶稣基督。Biblical theology studies the COVENANT which God has established, in order to save his people. 圣经神学研究,圣经里面神所设立的约,上帝与祂的子民立约,借着这个约来拯救祂的子民。There is only ONE covenant, 圣经里面只有一个约,although it is expressed and administered with different outward forms.虽然这个约在不同历史时期会用不同的形式来表达,会用不同的外在方法来执行这个约的。
Biblical theology studies JESUS CHRIST 圣经神学研究耶稣基督– how the Old Testament prepares for his coming; 研究旧约圣经怎么预备耶稣基督的降世;how the Old Testament promises his coming; 旧约圣经怎么样应许耶稣基督的降世;how the Old Testament prophesied about his coming and his work; 旧约圣经怎么预言基督降世和他的大工;and how the Old Testament provides “types” which show forth Christ and his work.旧约圣经并且提供不同的预表,象征着、展示着、指向基督和祂的救赎工作的。
Dr. Clowney loves to point out for us: 克罗尼博士非常喜欢向我们指出:the Old Testament speaks/teaches about Jesus Christ! 旧约圣经是讲耶稣基督的!About his sufferings and his resurrection!旧约圣经是教导基督的受苦跟复活的! Who says so? 谁说的?Our Lord Jesus Christ says so! 是主耶稣基督亲自说的!Luke 24:25-27, 44-48.路加福音第24章第25节—27节,然后44—48节(Luke 24:25路加24章25节:And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 耶稣对他们说:“无知的人哪,先知所说的一切话,你们的心信得太迟钝了。 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?”基督这样受害,又进入他的荣耀,岂不是应当的吗?(必然的吗)” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, 于是从摩西和众先知起,he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.凡经上所指着自己的话都给他们讲解明白了。「或者说开他们的心窍。」
Luke 24:44路加24章44节起:Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, 主对他们说:“这就是我从前与你们同在的时候,对你们说过的话:that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”摩西的律法、先知书和诗篇上所记关于我的一切事,都必定应验。” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 于是他开他们的心窍,使他们明白圣经;and said to them, 又说:“Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,“经上这样记着:基督必须受害,第三天从死人中复活。 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.人要奉他的名传讲悔改与赦罪的道,从耶路撒冷起,直传到万国,You are witnesses of these things. 你们就是这些事的见证。 (路加福音24:44-48 新译本) 这是耶稣复活之后,两次向门徒所开的旧约神学讲座。These are 2 Old Testament theology 讲座 He conducted for His diciples.after He was raised from dead.我们再来看Further more,Biblical theology shows how God reveals his attributes, 圣经神学展示出神怎么样显明祂的属性,gives his promises of grace and salvation, 赐下祂救恩的恩典跟应许,gives his people his holy law, 向祂的子民颁布祂的圣洁的律法,and deals with his people in grace and in holy judgment, 用圣洁、怜悯、忿怒的审判来对待祂的子民,but all the while moving forward to the cross of Jesus Christ and his resurrection. 从中,一直直指基督的十字架和复活。
Biblical theology is very rich that of studying the Bible, very different from the systematic theology.圣经神学跟系统神学不同,是一个很深入的研究圣经的方法。Today, there are 2 Study Bibles using the ESV今天,英文标准版的圣经其中有两种的研读版:Systematic Theology Study Bible系统神学研读版的圣经,and Story of Redemption Study Bible还有救赎历史的研读版,the second one emphasis the biblical theology. 第二种的研读版就特别强调圣经神学.
So we see that Edmand Clowney is a biblical theologian…J.I. Pecker really paid tribute to him in this regard, 所以我们看到克罗尼是一个圣经神学的大师,已故的巴刻博士也曾经这样的给克罗尼这样的一个赞誉的,that he was a trailblazer他是一个开荒牛,开路者。
In the next section we will talk about some of Edmand Clowney’s writing style, his English writing style is very important for us to understan , and we are going to unpack all the riches of his writings.下一讲我们会继续讲克罗尼博士的英文的写作的手法,这样子我们可以揭露出很多的细节,看到他的写作是多么的浓缩、深厚和丰富。This is where we close.我们在这里先告一段落。
