  • There must be a constant and increasing appreciation that those sin still remains it does not have the mastery.基督徒必须不断地、越来越体会到,虽然罪仍然存留,但是罪不再掌控、不再做王了。There is a total difference between surviving sin and reigning sin,残存的罪和做王的掌控生命的罪这两者是完全不同的,the regenerate in conflict with sin and the unregenerate complacent to sin.也就是重生的人与罪争战,和没有重生的人在罪中对罪满足现状,这两者是完全不同的。It is one thing for sin to live in us: it is another for us to live in sin.罪存在在我们里面是一件事,我们活在罪中又是另一码事。It is one thing for the enemy to occupy the capital; it is another for his defeated hosts to harass the garrisons of the kingdom.一个敌军占有了一个国家的首都是一码事,那些已经战败的军队尝试去攻击一些的国度里面的要塞那是另外一码事(后者是指基督徒)。It is of paramount concern for the Christian and for the interests of his sanctification that he should know that sin does not have dominion over him,对一个基督徒,对他整个成圣的功夫很重要的一件事,很有利的一件事就是基督徒必须知道,罪不再做他的王,that the forces of redeeming, regenerative, and sanctifying grace have been brought to bear upon him in that which is central in his moral and Spiritual being,就是做这个基督徒的整个人的道德跟灵命的核心,就是他的内心里,上帝那个救赎他的、重生他的、使他成圣的恩典的能力已经运行在他的身上了,that he is the habitation of God through the Spirit,因为他借着圣灵他是上帝的居所,或圣殿,and that Christ has been formed in him the hope of glory.基督已经在他里成型,就是荣耀的盼望。This is equivalent to saying that he must reckon himself to be dead indeed unto sin 这些等于说他必须认自己是对罪诚然是死了,but alive to God through Jesus Christ his Lord.但是借着他的主耶稣基督向神是活的。It is the faith of this fact that provides the basis for, and the incentive to the fulfilment of, the exhortation,(Rom. 6:12,13)就是因为相信这个事实的信心,就是保罗在罗马书第六章12-13节这个劝告的根据和给我们的动力,他的劝告的根据和动力(罗马书第六章第12节到第13节:)所以,不要容罪在你们必死的身上作王,使你们顺从身子的私欲。也不要将你们的肢体献给罪作不义的器具;倒要像从死里复活的人,将自己献给上帝,并将肢体作义的器具献给上帝。(就是因为上帝已经改变了,我们所以保罗说不要再把自己献上作为罪的器具。[英文经文林牧师没有读]) In this matter the indicative lies at the basis of the imperative这句话里面有两个字:这个indicative 我把它翻成“已然”,就是已经的已,就是事实;然后imperative就是命令,是“应然”应该的应,在这件事情上,已然乃是应然的依据,and our faith of fact is indispensable to the discharge of duty.我们对上帝成就的事实的信心在我们履行我们的义务的时候是必须要有的。The faith that sin will not have dominion我们相信罪不作王,这个信心,is the dynamic in bondservice to righteousness and to God就是这个动力催逼我们做义的奴仆,做上帝的仆人,so that we may have the fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life.好叫我们结出圣洁的果子来,结果就是永生。(罗马书第六章17,22节,6:17,22:感谢上帝!因为你们从前虽然作罪的奴仆,现今却从心里顺服了所传给你们道理的模范。【罗6:22】但现今你们既从罪里得了释放,作了上帝的奴仆,就有成圣的果子,那结局就是永生。)It is the concern of sanctification that sin be more and more mortified 成圣工夫所关注的,就是罪越来越被致死and holiness ingenerated and cultivated. 圣洁在信徒生命中造成,而且培育、滋长。

It is necessary to be reminded that in the last analysis we do not sanctify ourselves.我们必须要被提醒,归根究底我们并不使自己成圣。It is God who sanctifies.使我们成圣的是上帝(1 Thess. 5:23,帖撒罗尼迦前书第五章23节:愿赐平安的 神亲自使你们全然成圣。)Specifically it is the Holy Spirit who is the agent of sanctification.我们讲得细一点,使人成圣的一那位是圣灵。In this connection certain observation require to be made.在这件事情上我们必须要注意几件事。

(1)第一件事。The mode of the Spirit’s of operation in  sanctification is encompassed with mystery.圣灵在做成圣的功夫,祂所用的工作的方式是充满着奥秘的。We do not know the mode of the Spirit’s indwelling 圣灵如何内住在我们里面我们不知道nor the mode of his efficient working in the hearts and minds and wills of God’s people by which they are progressively cleansed from the defilement of sin and more and more transfigured after the image of Christ.同样的奥秘的是圣灵如何有效地在上帝子民的心中、他们的思想中、他们意志中工作,以至于信徒越来越从罪的玷污,越来越洁净;信徒越来越改变、效法基督的形象;就是圣灵究竟如何做的是一个奥秘。While we must not do prejudice to the fact that the Spirit’s work in our hearts reflects itself in our awareness and consciousness,是的,我们不能抹杀一个事实,就是圣灵在我们心中的工作会在我们的意识中会反应出来的,while we must not relegate sanctification to the realm of the subconscious我们也不可以贬低成圣的功夫,把它驳在潜意识的层面上and fail to recognize that sanctification draws within its orbit the whole field of conscious  activity on our part,我们不能不知道成圣的工作的范围包含了我们的有意识的活动的整个的范围,虽然如此,yet, we must also appreciate the fact我们也必须同时体会到一件事实就是there is an agency on the part of the Holy Spirit that far surpasses analysis or introspection on our part.圣灵亲自所做的工作从一方面来看,完全超越我们的分析,也是完全超越我们的自我省察的;就是你怎么样的分析,怎么样的自我审查,圣灵的工作仍然是奥秘的。

The effect of this constant and uninterrupted agency come within the scope of our consciousness in understanding, feeling, and will.圣灵这样子的不断地、不间断地工作,祂的工作的效果是在我们的意识的范围里面的;这个效果是在我们的思想、感觉和意识的范围里面的。But we must not suppose that the measure of our understanding or experience is the matter of the Holy Spirit’s  working.但是我们不可以以为我们在什么程度上了解,在什么程度上经验到圣灵的工作,就是在那个程度,不对的。In every distinct and particular movement of the believer in the way of holiness 在信徒走在圣洁的道路上,在他的生命中,每一个特定的心中或者的生命中的动作,there is an energizing activity of the Holy Spirit,都有圣灵赐人能力的这个的作为,and when we try to discover what the mode of that exercise of his grace  and power is 而当我们尝试去发现究竟圣灵运作他祂的恩典和能力是怎么样运作的,是用什么形式的话呢,但我们想要知道的时候,we realize how far we are from being able to diagnose the secret workings of the Spirit.我们就会发觉到,我们离开能够分析圣灵隐秘的工作甚远。

(2)第二,我们必须要注意到第二件事。It is imperative that we realize our complete dependence upon the Holy Spirit.我们必须要了解到我们是完全依靠圣灵,这个是必须要有的。We must not forget, of course, that our activity is enlisted to the fullest extent in the process of sanctification.当然,我们不可以忘记,在成圣的过程中,上帝呼吁我们完全的要有我们的动作,完全有我们的行为;上帝完全呼召我们要做成成圣的功夫的。But we must not rely upon our own strength of resolution or purpose.可是我们不可以依靠我们自己决志,或者我们的意象的能力。It is when we are weak that we are strong.当我们软弱的时候,就是我们强壮的时候。It is by grace that we are being saved as surely as by grace we have been saved.正如我们得救,我们被拯救是本乎恩是确定的,同样的,我们正在不断地被拯救,是本乎恩,也是肯定的事实。If we are not keenly sensitive to our own helplessness,假如我们不是非常注意到我们的无助,对我们的无助非常的敏感的话,then we can make the use of the means of sanctification the minister of self-righteousness and pride我们就会使用恩具的时候,使用成圣的方法的时候,这些的方法就成为我们自以为义和骄傲的工具,and thus defeat the end of sanctification.因此,就对我们成圣的目标做出反作用。We must rely not upon the means of sanctification我们完全不可以依靠成圣的方法but upon the God of all grace.我们要完全依赖这位完全是恩惠的神。

Self-confident moralism promotes pride,自信的那种道德主义是促进人的骄傲的,and sanctification promotes humility and contrition.而成圣所促进的是谦卑和忏悔的心。

(3)第三方面我们要观察到的:It is as the Spirit of Christ and as the Spirit of him who raised up Christ from the dead the Holy Spirit sanctifies.圣灵使人成圣,这位圣灵是基督的灵,也是那位使基督从死里复活那位是父神的灵。We may not think of the Spirit as operative in us apart from the risen and gloried Christ.当我们想到圣灵在我们里面运行的时候,不可以不注意到耶稣基督已经复活,已经被荣耀,因为圣灵的工作与基督徒的复活跟升高是完全的连在一起的。The sanctifying process is not only dependent on upon the death and resurrection of Christ in its initiation;成圣的过程不断地在它开始的时候是依靠基督的死跟复活;it is also dependent upon the death and resurrection of Christ in it continuance.成圣不断地在他开始的时候,重生的时候是靠基督的死跟复活,成圣的过程继续的时候,也是依靠着基督的死和复活的。It is by the efficacy and virtue which proceed from the exalted Lord the sanctification carried on,成圣能够继续的发生,完全是因为我们的被高举的主耶稣他的有效、大能和他的能力,and such virtue belongs to the exalted Lord by reason of his death and resurrection.(这一部分漏掉了)。It is by the Spirit that this virtue is communicated.基督复活的大能,the virtue,virtue可以翻成美德,也可以翻成大能,基督的大能是由圣灵所传递的。Perhaps the most significant passage in this connection is 2 Corinthians 3:17,18,可能在这方面最重要的经文就是哥林多后书第三章第17,18节,where Paul says that the Lord is the Spirit在那里保罗说,主就是灵and then indicates that the transforming process by which we are transformed into the Lord’s  image is by “the Spirit of the Lord” or, perhaps more accurately, “the Lord of the Spirit.”保罗在那里也指出,我们被改变成为主的形象这整个改变的过程,是由“主的灵”,或者更准确地说:“灵的主”所做的。However we may interpret the expression at the end of verse 18,我们不论如何解释哥林多后书三章18最后的那个短句,it is apparent that the sanctifying work of the Spirit not only consists in progressive conformation to the image of Christ,很明显的一件事就是,圣灵成圣的工作不仅仅是使人逐步地效法基督的形象,but is also dependent upon the activity of the exalted Lord.圣灵成圣的工作也是依靠着升高的主耶稣祂的作为的。(参考林前15:45:“首先的人亚当成了有灵的活人(“灵”或作“血气”)”,末后的亚当成了叫人活的灵。) It is the peculiar prerogative and function of the Holy Spirit to glorify Christ by taking of the things of Christ and showing them unto the people of God.圣灵荣耀基督的特别的权力和功能,就是把关乎基督的事向上帝的子民彰显出来。(参考一些的经文,约16:14,16:【约16:14】他(就是保惠师)要荣耀我,因为他要将受于我的告诉你们。【约16:16】“等不多时,你们就不得见我;再等不多时,你们还要见我。”现在我们来读林后3:17-18:【林后3:17】主就是那灵;主的灵在哪里,那里就得以自由。【林后3:18】我们众人既然敞着脸得以看见主的荣光,好像从镜子里返照,就变成主的形状,荣上加荣,如同从主的灵变成的。或者如同从灵的主变成的。)It is as the indwelling Spirit that he does this圣灵是身为内住在基督徒的心中的灵做成这件事的,and as the advocate with believers.祂是身为保惠师做成这件事的,彰显关怀基督的事在信徒的心中。(约翰福音第14章16-17:【约14:16】我要求父,父就另外赐给你们一位保惠师(或作“训慰师”。下同),叫他永远与你们同在,【约14:17】就是真理的圣灵,乃世人不能接受的。因为不见他,也不认识他;你们却认识他,因他常与你们同在,也要在你们里面。)

第三部分结束,the concern of sanctification,成圣其事。下讲我们开始第四部分the means of sanctification,成圣的方法。
