In verse 25 we have another category in terms of which the provision which God has made for our justification is viewed.\u00a0 It is that of propitiation.\u00a0 Redemption contemplates our bondage and is the provision of grace to release us from that bondage.\u00a0 Propitiation contemplates our liability to the wrath of God and is the provision of grace whereby we may be freed form that wrath.\u00a0 It is wholly consonant with Paul\u2019s teaching in this epistle that he should enunciate the provision of God\u2019s grace unto our justification in this way.\u00a0 For he had begun his demonstration that the whole human race is under sin with the affirmation that \u201cthe wrath of God is revealed form heaven upon all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men\u201d (1:18).\u00a0 And instead of stumbling at this concept of propitiation we should rather anticipate that the precise category suited to the need and liability created by the wrath of God would be enlisted to describe or define the provision of God\u2019s grace.<\/p>\n

Although the word used here by the apostle occurs only twice in the New Testament and in the other instance (Heb. 9:5) plainly means the mercy-seat, the covering of the ark of the covenant in the most holy place, yet there is good reason for believing that in this case it means \u201cpropitiatory offering\u201d and is to be interpreted after the analogy of I John 2:2; 4:10; Heb. 2:17 (cf. Luke 18:13; Heb. 8:12).\u00a0 Christ is therefore said to have been a propitiatory sacrifice.<\/p>\n

The precise language of the text is to be carefully observed.\u00a0 It is not said here that Christ gave himself a propitiatory sacrifice, though such language would have been in accord with the teaching of Scripture.\u00a0 Our attention is drawn to the fact that God set him forth a propitiatory sacrifice, and since the person in view is thus distinguished from Christ it is God the Father who is represented as setting him forth (cf. 5:8, 10; 8:3; I Cor. 8:6; II Cor. 5:18, 19; Eph. 4:4-6; Heb. 2:10-13).\u00a0 It is quite alien to biblical thought to overlook the agency of God the father in the provisions of redemption and it is perversion to represent the Father as won over to the exercise of grace and mercy by the intervention of Christ\u2019s propitiatory accomplishment.\u00a0 Paul here represents the Father as taking the initiative in this action and as making the provision by which propitiation was wrought.<\/p>\n

The term rendered \u201cset forth\u201d may most properly bear this signification.\u00a0 It could mean \u201cpurposed\u201d as in 1:13; Ephesians 1:9.\u00a0 But the context and the usage in other Greek sources would indicate that the thought is that of public setting forth.\u00a0 The form suggests that there may be the reflexive idea and in that event some emphasis would fall upon the fact that God set forth for himself a propitiation.\u00a0 This thought is admirably in accord with the total purport of the passage and of the apostle\u2019s teaching elsewhere; it would be a reminder to us that divine interests or exigencies are fulfilled by the propitiatory provision.\u00a0 While, however, we may not press this significance of the verb itself, the same thought is conveyed by the fact that God the Father set forth Christ a propitiation to show forth his righteousness.\u00a0 The propitiation has a Godward reference.\u00a0 The interests of men are, of course, promoted to the highest degree, but in realizing these interests exigencies of divine import are conserved.\u00a0 We are not left to surmise what these are \u2013 the setting forth was to the end of demonstrating God\u2019s righteousness.<\/p>\n

It would not be incongruous with the thought of this passage if we regarded \u201cthe righteousness of God\u201d referred to here in verse 25 as the righteousness of God that is constitutive of our justification, as in verses 21, 22 and 1:17.\u00a0 For it is true that this righteousness is openly set forth in the propitiation and the propitiation could be viewed as directed to that end.\u00a0 The propitiation effects our justifying righteousness and therefore may be construed as our righteousness exhibited.\u00a0 But there are compelling reasons for thinking that the righteousness of God in this case is the attribute of justice, as in verse 5.<\/p>\n

(1) In verse 26 Paul returns to this same consideration and informs us specifically of the end to which this demonstration of righteousness is directed; it is to the end \u201cthat he may be just and the justifier of him who is of the faith of Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 This intimates that the exigency in view is the justice of God in the justification of sinners.\u00a0\u00a0 In the provisions of propitiation two things cohere and coalesce, the justice of God and the justification of the ungodly.\u00a0 This justice of God implied in the expression, \u201cthat he might be just\u201d cannot be the righteousness of God that is operative unto and constitutive of our justification.\u00a0 The form of the expression shows that it is the inherent righteousness of God that cannot be violated on any account and must be vindicated and conserved in the justification of sinners.<\/p>\n
This shows that the righteousness contemplated in the demonstration in verse 25, as well as in verse 26, is the inherent justice of God.<\/p>\n

(2) We are not only informed in verse 26 of the end to which this demonstration of<\/p>\n
righteousness was directed but also in verse 25 of a reason for which the demonstration was necessary.\u00a0 It is \u201con account of the passing over of the sins committed before hand in the forbearance of God.\u201d\u00a0 Two passages in Paul\u2019s speeches as reported in Acts (14:16; 17:30) illumine for us what he means by \u201cthe forbearance of God;\u201d he is referring to the generations gone by when God \u201csuffered all the nations to walk in their own ways,\u201d \u201cthe times of ignorance\u201d in contrast with the change which occurred in God\u2019s economy of grace when \u201cnow he commands men that they should all everywhere repent\u201d (Acts 17:30).\u00a0 In these generations gone by God did not visit men with wrath commensurate with their sins.\u00a0 In this sense there was a by-passing or overlooking of their sins.\u00a0 This by-passing is not to be equated with remission.<\/p>\n

Suspension is not equivalent to forgiveness.\u00a0 It is this consideration \u2013 in the ages gone by God did not execute upon men the full measure of his displeasure but exercised forbearance \u2013 that the apostle adduces here as one reason why God exhibited his righteousness in Christ as the propitiation.\u00a0 The forbearance exercised in past ages tended to obscure in the apprehension of men the inviolability of God\u2019s justice.\u00a0 Forbearance was liable to be interpreted as revocation and remission of the same. Hence now in Christ and in his propitiation God gave open demonstration that in order to the revocation of his wrath and punitive judgment it was necessary to provide a propitiation. \u201cPassing over\u201d is not justification and justification requires a propitiation that fully satisfied and vindicates God\u2019s justice.<\/p>\n
\u56e0\u6b64\u6211\u4eec\u53ef\u4ee5\u660e\u663e\u770b\u51fa\uff0c\u4e0a\u5e1d\u5bbd\u5bb9\u3001\u8d8a\u8fc7\uff08\u4efb\u51ed\uff09\u4eba\u72af\u7f6a\uff0c\u5e76\u4e0d\u610f\u5473\u4e0a\u5e1d\u5fc5\u987b\u663e\u660e\u7942\u5728\u79f0\u4e49\u4e0a\u7684\u300c\u4e49\u300d\u3002\u4e8b\u5b9e\u4e0a\uff0c\u4e0a\u5e1d\u7684\u5bbd\u5bb9\u610f\u5473\u7740\uff0c\u7942\u5fc5\u987b\u663e\u660e\u7942\u672c\u6027\u91cc\u7684\u300c\u4e49\u300d\uff0c\u8fd9\u6837\u5c31\u663e\u660e\uff08\u5728\u5ba3\u8bb2\u798f\u97f3\u65f6\u5411\u5168\u4e16\u754c\u4eba\u7c7b\u663e\u660e\uff09\u4eba\u82e5\u8981\u79f0\u4e49\uff0c\u8036\u7a23\u5b9d\u8840\u6240\u6210\u5c31\u7684\u633d\u56de\u796d\u662f\u4e0d\u53ef\u6216\u7f3a\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n
It can readily be seen therefore that the passing over of sins in the forbearance of God did not make it necessary for God to demonstrate his justifying righteousness, but that\u00a0 the passing over did make it necessary for him to demonstrate his inherent justice and that by showing (to all men in the worldwide proclamation of the gospel) that justification demands nothing less than the propitiation made in Jesus\u2019 blood.<\/p>\n

We conclude therefore that the righteousness of God, referred to in verses 25, 26 as demonstrated, is the inherent justice of God.\u00a0 This is of basic relevance in our interpretation of Paul\u2019s teaching.\u00a0 It indicates that the vindication and satisfaction of the dictates of justice lie at the heart of his doctrine of redemption and propitiation as the provisions of God\u2019s grace in order to the justification of sinners.\u00a0 We may say, if we will, that the demonstration is governmental or rectoral.\u00a0 The demonstration is necessary to that government of God that is concerned with and is registered in the justification of sinners.<\/p>\n

But we cannot say that the justice demonstrated in the propitiation is merely governmental; it is the inherent justice of God that is demonstrated in a propitiation which meets and removes the judgment of his wrath.\u00a0 It is this complex of thought that is to be elicited from Romans 3:24-26.\u00a0 And this passage exemplifies how the apostle can interweave such categories as redemption, propitiation, and the vindication of justice because they are but different aspects from which the provisions of his grace for the salvation of men may be viewed and different facets of that process by which he is just when he justifies those who have faith in Jesus.<\/p>\n

There are a few additional questions pertinent to verses 25 and 26 that call for comment.<\/p>\n
\u6211\u4eec\u5982\u4f55\u7406\u89e3\u300c\u633d\u56de\u796d\uff0c\u662f\u51ed\u7740\u8036\u7a23\u7684\u8840\uff0c\u501f\u7740\u4eba\u7684\u4fe1\u300d\u8fd9\u53e5\u8bdd\u7684\u5404\u90e8\u5206\uff1f\u5728\u8fd9\u95ee\u9898\u4e0a\u6211\u4eec\u96be\u4ee5\u6b66\u65ad\u3002\u6709\u4eba\u89e3\u91ca\u300c\u51ed\u7740\u8036\u7a23\u7684\u8840\u300d\u662f\u6307\u4fe1\u5fc3\u7684\u5bf9\u8c61\uff1b\u53e6\u6709\u4eba\u8ba4\u4e3a\u300c\u51ed\u7942\u7684\u8840\u300d\u662f\u4e0e\u633d\u56de\u796d\u76f4\u63a5\u6709\u5173\u8fde\u7684\uff1b\u81f3\u4e8e\u4fe1\u5fc3\u7684\u5b9a\u4e49\uff0c\u5728\u4e0a\u4e0b\u6587\u4e2d\u660e\u663e\u53ef\u770b\u51fa\u662f\u4fe1\u9760\u57fa\u7763(faith in Christ)\u3002<\/p>\n
How are we to construe the relation to one another of the component parts of \u201ca propitiation through faith in his blood\u201d?\u00a0 It is difficult to be dogmatic.\u00a0 Some construe \u201cin his blood\u201d as the object of faith; others connect \u201cin his blood\u201d directly with the propitiation, and faith is regarded as sufficiently defined by the context to be faith in Christ.<\/p>\n
\u6211\u4eec\u82e5\u4ee522\u8282\u300c\u4e0a\u5e1d\u7684\u4e49\uff0c\u56e0\u4fe1\u8036\u7a23\u57fa\u7763\uff0c\u52a0\u7ed9\u4e00\u5207\u76f8\u4fe1\u7684\u4eba\u300d\u4e3a\u6807\u51c6\uff0c<\/p>\n
\u7b2c\u4e8c\u79cd\u89e3\u91ca\u8f83\u4e3a\u53ef\u4fe1\u3002\u65e0\u7591\u5730\uff0c\u633d\u56de\u796d\u5c31\u662f\u57fa\u7763\u8036\u7a23\u7684\u8840\u6240\u6210\u5c31\u7684\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e5f\u7b26\u5408\u4fdd\u7f57<\/p>\n

\u8ba9\u633d\u56de\u796d\u516c\u5f00\u88ab\u663e\u660e\uff08\u53c2\ufe55\u52a03\ufe551\uff09\u3002\u518d\u8005\uff0c\u5728\u8fd9\u4e9b\u4e0a\u4e0b\u6587\u4e2d\u51fa\u73b0\u300c\u4fe1\u5fc3\u300d\u800c\u4e0d\u8bf4\u660e\u4fe1\u5fc3\u7684\u5bf9\u8c61\uff0c\u4e5f\u7b26\u5408\u4fdd\u7f57\u4e00\u8d2f\u7684\u4f5c\u6cd5\uff08\u53c2\ufe5522\u8282\u4e0b\uff1b1\ufe5517\uff09\u3002\u4fe1\u5fc3\u4e43\u662f\u5de5\u5177\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u85c9\u4fe1\u5fc3\u5728\u5ba2\u89c2\u7684\u6069\u8d50\u4e0a\u6709\u4efd\ufe55\u800c\u672c\u6bb5\u6240\u6307\u7684\u6069\u8d50\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u8036\u7a23\u5b9d\u8840\u6210\u5c31\u7684\u633d\u56de\u796d\u3002<\/p>\n
If we are guided by the analogy of the expression in verse 22, \u201ca righteousness of God through faith of Jesus Christ,\u201d this latter alternative seems preferable.\u00a0 The propitiation is undoubtedly that which is made in the blood of Christ Jesus and it is in accord with Paul\u2019s thought both to regard the blood of Christ as defining that in which the propitiatory sacrifice consisted and as that which served to set forth openly the propitiation (cf. Gal. 3:1).\u00a0 Furthermore, it is in accord with Paul\u2019s pattern to refer to faith in such connections, without necessarily defining its object (cf. vs. 22b; 1:17), as the instrumentality by which we become the actual partakers of the objective gift in view, in this case propitiation in Jesus\u2019 blood.<\/p>\n
\u6700\u540e\uff0c\u82e5\u8ba4\u4e3a\u57fa\u7763\u7684\u5b9d\u8840\u4e43\u662f\u4fe1\u5fc3\u7684\u5bf9\u8c61\uff0c\u5219\u504f\u79bb\u4fdd\u7f57\u7528\u8bcd\u7684\u7cbe\u786e\ufe55\u4fdd\u7f57\u7684\u610f\u601d\u662f\uff0c\u57fa\u7763\u81ea\u5df1\u4e43\u662f\u4fe1\u5fc3\u7684\u5bf9\u8c61\uff0c\u7279\u522b\u4ece\u672c\u6bb5\u7684\u4e0a\u4e0b\u6587\u6765\u770b\uff08\u6309\ufe5522\u8282\u4e0a\uff0c26\u8282\u4e0b\uff09\u3002<\/p>\n
Finally, it might be a deviation from the precision of Paul\u2019s usage in representing Christ himself as the object of faith, especially in this context (cf. vss. 22a, 26b), to take the blood of Christ here as that on which faith terminates.<\/p>\n
\u81f3\u4e8e26\u8282\u300c\u5728\u4eca\u65f6\u300d\u786e\u6307\u4ec0\u4e48\uff0c\u518d\u4e00\u6b21\u8ba9\u6211\u4eec\u770b\u51fa\uff0c\u4e0a\u5e1d\u516c\u5f00\u663e\u660e\u7942\u7684\u516c\u4e49\u662f\u5728\u5386\u53f2\u4e0a\u4ec0\u4e48\u65f6\u4ee3\uff0c\u662f\u591a\u4e48\u7684\u91cd\u8981\u3002\u8fd9\u65f6\u4ee3\u4e0e\u4e0a\u5e1d\u5148\u524d\u5fcd\u8010\u7684\u65f6\u4ee3\u4e92\u76f8\u5bf9\u7167\uff0c\u8bf4\u660e\uff0c\u4e0a\u5e1d\u4e3a\u81ea\u5df1\u6210\u5c31\u7684\u4e8b\uff0c\u662f\u5728\u5386\u53f2\u4e2d\u7684\u67d0\u4e00\u4e2a\u65f6\u523b\u7684\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u60f3\u5230\u4e0a\u5e1d\u6240\u8003\u8651\u4e0e\u7942\u672c\u6027\u7684\u9700\u6c42\u65f6\uff0c\u4e0d\u53ef\u9000\u5230\u4e00\u79cd\u300c\u8d85\u5386\u53f2\u300d\u7684\u5c42\u9762\u53bb\u3002<\/p>\n
The definite specification of time in the expression \u201cat this present time\u201d (vs. 26) is another example of the significance attached to the historical epoch in which God gave this demonstration of his justice.\u00a0 It is contrasted with the generations of the past when God\u2019s forbearance was in exercise, and it shows that location in history belongs to those accomplishments which have a Godward reference at their center.\u00a0 We are not to relegate to the realm of the superhistorical that which meets divine interests and exigencies.<\/p>\n
26\u8282\u672b\u300c\u4fe1\u8036\u7a23\u7684\u4eba\u300d\uff08\u539f\u6587\ufe55\u300c\u8036\u7a23\u7684\u4fe1\u300d\uff09\u8fd9\u79cd\u8868\u8fbe\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u6ca1\u6709\u5728\u300a\u65b0\u7ea6\u5723\u7ecf\u300b\u51fa\u73b0\u8fc7\uff0c\u867d\u7136\u6709\u4e9b\u5e73\u884c\u7528\u6cd5\uff08\u52a02\ufe5516\uff1b3\ufe5522\uff1b\u81533\ufe559\uff09\u3002\u57fa\u4e8e\u4e0a\u6587\u6240\u770b\u5230\u7684\uff08\u89c122\u8282\u4e0e\u6ce8\u811a\uff09\uff0c\u82e5\u8ba4\u4e3a\u8fd9\u77ed\u53e5\u4e0e\u5b8c\u5168\u5e73\u884c\u7684\u300c\u4e9a\u4f2f\u62c9\u7f55\u7684\u4fe1\u300d\uff084\ufe5516\uff09\u6709\u5173\u8fde\uff0c\u5219\u5b8c\u5168\u6ca1\u6709\u6839\u636e\u3002<\/p>\n
The formula at the end of verse 26, \u201cof the faith of Jesus,\u201d though it has close parallels (Gal. 2:16; 3:22; Phil. 3:9), is not used anywhere else in this precise form.\u00a0 In view of what we have found above (vs. 22 and footnote thereon) it would be totally indefensible to suppose that it is to be interpreted after the analogy of an expression which Paul uses and which in form is identical, namely, \u201cof the faith of Abraham\u201d (4:16).<\/p>\n

This latter formula undoubtedly means faith patterned after the faith of Abraham.\u00a0 But the formula \u201cof the faith of Jesus\u201d must be interpreted in accord with the analogy of Paul\u2019s usage elsewhere in which Jesus Christ or Christ Jesus or Christ is the object of the faith referred to.\u00a0 There is, however, in this unique formula the touch of tenderness, on the one hand, and of majesty, on the other.\u00a0 The name Jesus suggests the intimacy of personal relationship to the Savior in that character evinced in his historical manifestation in the days of his flesh.\u00a0 But when Paul conceives of him as the object of this faith there is intimated the majesty with which he regarded the same historical Jesus as invested.<\/p>\n
