My dad was already here\uff0cand so they all went out\uff0cso there was a wave of men after the war who went back to China. And so\uff0cto relatives\uff0cmy dad met my mother and married without really knowing each other. So\uff0cthat\u2019s sort of the background. I don\u2019t think that for any of you folks that happened that way\uff0cso I was pretty fortunate. I think\uff0ccomparing my family to some of my friends\u2019 families\uff0cI realized that my mom and dad really loved each other very much\uff0cso I think that was very unusual.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of things I appreciate\uff0cmy father worked in a Chinese restaurant when he first came to the States. He worked in a laundry business because one of my relatives had a laundry. And then\uff0cwhen he married my mother\uff0cbecause my mother didn\u2019t know English\uff0cshe worked in the garment factory. So\uff0cthis is very typical in terms of the Chinese families in Boston\uff0cand also being in the city\uff0cI think it\u2019s very different. I think coming to this family camp taught me to appreciate suburban Chinese\uff0cbecause all my experience has always been in the urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the ABCs in my generation\u2014I\u2019m in my mid-30s now\u2014we\u2019re all first-generation born here. We are pretty bilingual\uff0cin the sense of knowing both English and Chinese\uff0cand I think that was more of a necessity because one out of the two parents did not speak English. So\uff0cfor me\uff0cthe first time I met a Chinese person over 40 speaking perfect English\uff0cI was totally in culture shock\uff0cbecause to me\uff0cthat was just totally impossible. Because every time when I go home\uff0cyou know\uff0cthe automatic minute you cross the front door\uff0cspeak Chinese\uff0cspeak Chinese.<\/p>\n<p>So\uff0cwith that in mind\uff0cI wrote down several characteristics\uff0cand this is by no means any blueprint of what an ABC\uff0cjust because I tell you these things. So\uff0cif you see these traits\uff0cyou can say that\u2019s an ABC\uff0cbecause what will happen is that you\u2019re not going to see all of these traits in any one ABC. Also\uff0csome of these traits will probably display in varying degrees\uff0clike some\u2014like he talked about\u2014some ABCs are more traditional\uff0cmore Chinese-y\uff0cand others are a little less so. There will be varying degrees\uff0cokay? So\uff0cthere\u2019s really no blueprint.<\/p>\n<p>And even when Dr. Lincoln asked me a couple of days ago to do this\uff0cI started talking to a couple of the youth workers here\uff0cand I found that none of them came up with the same list\uff0cor\uff0cyou know\uff0cthey had different experiences. So\uff0cthat made it a little difficult for me to try to provide any standards or norms.<\/p>\n<p>Recently\uff0cI just finished a book called <em>Joy Luck Club<\/em> by Amy Tan. Are you familiar with that? When I first picked it up\uff0cI read it\uff0cit just seemed so real. And then a friend of mine says\uff0cno\uff0cit\u2019s fiction. I said\uff0cno! And so\uff0cwhen I read through that\uff0cI really felt that it was very descriptive of my family and my background. It takes a story about\uff0cI think it was about four families\uff0cpretty much the mothers and the daughters\uff0cthe four ABC daughters. And there was always the tension between the old and new\uff0cand I think Dr. Link talked about that. And within the ABC mind\uff0cthings that are old are considered\uff0cwe don\u2019t want that\uff0cwe only want the new things\uff0cwe want change\uff0cand it has to come fast.<\/p>\n<p>And the other thing\uff0cin the beginning of the book\uff0cit talks about\uff0cthey\u2019re in this\u2014I don\u2019t know whether it was a mahjong club\u2014but they called the Joy Luck Club. And so\uff0cthe daughter is there\uff0cthe mother has died\uff0cand all the other people\uff0cthe other families got together and will send her back to China to meet the two long-lost daughters of her mother before the mother came to faith. And so\uff0cthey kept telling her\uff0coh\uff0cwhen you go back\uff0cjust tell them what your mother was like\uff0cand just saying all these things. And so\uff0cthe daughter said\uff0cI don\u2019t know my mother. And those mothers said\uff0coh yes\uff0cyou do\uff0cyou know her\uff0cjust tell those daughters what she\u2019s like. And as I read those lines\uff0cI really felt very similar\uff0cbecause with the choice to be parents\uff0cthey\u2019re very distant. They will always be parents\uff0cthey show their love for us by\uff0cyou know\uff0cfeeding us\uff0cclothing us\uff0cyou know\uff0cmaking sure that we\u2019re safe\uff0cbut as far as really knowing the inside person\uff0cI can honestly say\uff0cI really don\u2019t know my mom and dad in terms of some of their inner feelings and inner thoughts on different issues.<\/p>\n<p>This really was brought home when someone had asked me to think about what my dad\u2019s thoughts were on different issues and emotions. And so\uff0cmy dad died ten years ago\uff0cand so I really had a hard time thinking of certain answers to those questions. And someone brought this book\uff0c<em>Always Daddy\u2019s Girl<\/em>\uff0cit\u2019s written by Norman Wright. And so\uff0cthe beginning of the book had the same kind of thing\uff0cit had a little survey on what are your dad\u2019s thoughts on work\uff0con leisure\uff0con women\uff0con this and that. And I was greatly saddened that I really could not answer any of those questions. And then I realized\uff0cI said\uff0cgee\uff0cI really do not know\uff0cyou know\uff0cmy parents\uff0ceven though I lived with them for so many years.<\/p>\n<p>So\uff0cI think that this is very typical\uff0cand there\u2019s a term called \u201cphantom father\uff0c\u201d and it\u2019s a father who\u2019s physically present but emotionally unavailable. And so\uff0cI think in the Chinese families\uff0cthis is very\uff0cvery typical\uff0cbecause our dad worked very strange hours\uff0clike from three o\u2019clock till\uff0cyou know\uff0cthree o\u2019clock in the afternoon\uff0cand then he wouldn\u2019t come home till two o\u2019clock in the morning. And as school kids\uff0cwe get off at school about two-thirty or three\uff0cand by then he\u2019s\uff0cyou know\uff0cgoing down to Trenton\uff0cdown to work. And so\uff0cby the time he gets home\uff0cwe\u2019re already in bed. And so\uff0cthis is sort of what really happens in the Chinatown family.<\/p>\n<p>And then I started thinking about\uff0cwhat do I know in terms of my parents as far as feelings? And I noticed that feelings of the word \u201churt\u201d and \u201cfear\u201d were not in my vocabulary. I probably felt those things\uff0cbut I think on the conscious level\uff0cthose two words were not within my vocabulary to share with other people. And I think it\u2019s because my parents\uff0cI really never saw them share or feel hurt. They may have felt those things\uff0cbut at least outwardly\uff0cthey never shared it and never showed it in their facial expression or through their lives.<\/p>\n<p>But the feelings that were pretty prominent that I knew very sure were shame and guilt. It\u2019s sort of like\uff0cyou know\uff0cespecially being in Chinatown\uff0coh\uff0cdon\u2019t do that\uff0cor you know\uff0cso-and-so\uff0call of Chinatown\uff0cyou\u2019re gonna shame the Yi name\uff0ckind of thing. So\uff0cwe were always cautious about our behaviors as a result\uff0cbecause of the shame and guilt that it may bring to us or to our family or to the Yi clan\uff0cyou know\uff0ckind of a thing.<\/p>\n<p>And another thing that I also realized too is that my parents also did not ever show that much physical affection or demonstrate approval. Like\uff0cif we\uff0cif I brought home my report card\uff0cthey won\u2019t see the A\uff0cthey would say\uff0chey\uff0chow come you got a B here? So\uff0cwe grew up always feeling that we have to try to win our parents\u2019 approval\uff0cand yet I don\u2019t even know when I would even get there\uff0cyou know\uff0cat what point will I win my parents\u2019 approval. Because they never really share that\uff0cit\u2019s only\uff0cand it\u2019s very strange that\uff0cif\u2014and this I didn\u2019t discover until I started living with Caucasian roommates\u2014and one roommate I had was very verbal and needed a lot of affection and verbal approval and those things. And I discovered that I treated her the same way my parents treated me\uff0cthat only when she did something wrong\uff0cthen I said something. So\uff0cwhen this disapproval is verbalized\uff0cbut when she did something right\uff0cI never affirmed her for it\uff0cdo you see what I mean? So\uff0cI think those are sort of the products of being ABC.<\/p>\n<p>And then\uff0csome other things I also saw as I grew up as well\uff0cis I also went through an identity crisis\uff0ccontinuing asking myself\uff0cwho am I? In 1986\uff0cI went to Shantou in China\uff0cand it\u2019s obvious that\uff0cyou know\uff0cABCs walk different\uff0cdress differently\uff0cyou know. So\uff0ceven though I was riding a bicycle in China\uff0cI think people\uff0cit\u2019s obvious that they can tell I\u2019m not a local person\uff0cyou know. So\uff0cwhen I was in China\uff0cpeople asked me who I was\uff0cyou know\uff0cI just automatically said\uff0coh no\uff0cI\u2019m a foreigner\uff0cyou know. And then\uff0cbut when I come to the States\uff0cand I travel to like Maine or Alabama or someplace\uff0cI said\uff0cno\uff0cI\u2019m Chinese. So\uff0cthere\u2019s always that searching of asking\uff0creally\uff0cwho am I? And part of that could be because of sort of a fragmented history. I think that\u2019s when he talks about roots\uff0cand how my picture of China or the history of my parents is very incomplete. What little I know is basically shared over the dinner table\uff0cand that wasn\u2019t until I was in my mid\uff0cyou know\uff0cmid-late 20s or 30s\uff0cand my mother started sharing more stories about her life back. But I think\uff0coverall\uff0cI don\u2019t really have a complete history of what my roots are\uff0cso it\u2019s very difficult\uff0cyou know\uff0cjust having a very fragmented path.<\/p>\n<p>And as I look at the church\uff0cI also saw something as well. Because one of the examples I also chose was\uff0cin Boston\uff0cwe have two congregations\uff0cEnglish-speaking worship and then also Chinese. But for many years\uff0cwe had just one service with translation. And it was exactly true in terms of what he described\uff0cthat we have been clamoring for a separate service\uff0cand our method was\uff0chere\uff0cwe worked out all those details and went to the deacons\uff0cand tried to propose something\uff0cthen somehow it got shot down\uff0cand people were very angry at the way we were doing things. And so\uff0cit was like over 10 years of kept talking about these things\uff0cand people kept saying\uff0cyou ABC\uff0cyou\u2019re not ready\uff0cirresponsible\uff0cand all those kinds of things. And so\uff0cit wasn\u2019t until 1983 that that finally materialized\uff0cand the minute it happened\uff0cyou know\uff0cI think that we were able to demonstrate that we were responsible and were able to provide the leadership and whatever.<\/p>\n<p>But again\uff0cI wonder if that time period\uff0cit was sort of the same thing\uff0ctrying to prove ourselves all the time. That\u2019s sort of a struggle\uff0cthat no matter what we do\uff0cwe feel that we always have to prove ourselves. And as I also look at the church in Boston\uff0cas we were talking about the colorblindness\uff0chow that affects the local church is that\uff0cin being Chinese\uff0craised in the urban area\uff0cI think there\u2019s a greater social consciousness of different issues happening in the Chinatown community\uff0cand also more concern for issues of discrimination and injustices.<\/p>\n<p>It was interesting that\uff0cin my church in Boston\uff0cit was the Chinese congregation that had people working for Chinatown services\uff0clike social workers or school principals and things like that. And\uff0cyou know\uff0cstarting several years ago\uff0cthey were trying to get together some kind of ESL program or whatever\uff0cand it just somehow never got off the ground. And then\uff0cthis past year\uff0cone of the ABCs in our congregation finally said\uff0chey\uff0cI\u2019m tired of waiting for this\uff0cso he just took the leadership\uff0cand he just started it\uff0cand now we have a very flourishing ESL program. And so\uff0cI don\u2019t know how much of it is that ABC is just impatient for change\uff0cor\uff0cyou know\uff0cthat we\u2019re just very action-oriented\uff0cwe just want to get things done\uff0cyou know\uff0cwe\u2019re tired of waiting.<\/p>\n<p>And so\uff0cwe had the ESL program\uff0cand then we also started the kids\u2019 club\uff0cwhich is like a summer outreach for neighborhood kids. And so\uff0cand then also\uff0cas I looked at the missions programs that we have\uff0cwe also send people to like Jamaica and Haiti. And I think how the colorblindness helps ABC is that\uff0cit\u2019s easy for us to do that kind of cross-culture\uff0cin terms of going to Black areas\uff0cBlack people. And we noticed that it was really difficult to get anyone from the Chinese congregation who wanted to do that\uff0cbecause they felt\u2014I don\u2019t know what the reasons were. And so\uff0cas a result\uff0cyou know\uff0cthe church started a program to go into Central America\uff0cto Chinese\uff0ccontinuing speaking Chinese. So\uff0cI think this is just sort of a taste in terms of how\uff0cyou know\uff0cbeing ABC\uff0cand some of the cultural things that kind of affect\uff0cand it\u2019s brought into the local church setting. That\u2019s all the time I have.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question: What are the things that you wish most your parents would have done for you or helped you with?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Probably just providing a little more guidance in terms of decision-making\uff0cbecause my dad was working in the restaurant\uff0che wasn\u2019t really in touch with\uff0coh\uff0cI guess this is really depicted in trying to choose a college\uff0cokay. And we had to take SATs and all those kinds of things\uff0cand this is probably where most ABCs are sort of self-taught\uff0cbecause we have to find our own resources\uff0cbecause my dad didn\u2019t know anything about colleges or the area\uff0cmy mother didn\u2019t really speak English\uff0cshe really\uff0cI mean\uff0cnone of them could provide us any assistance in terms of financial assistance either. And in terms of vocational guidance\uff0cI don\u2019t ever remember ever going to my parents and asking them those kinds of things\uff0cand they never said anything to us either. It was more that\uff0cas we were growing up\uff0cit\u2019s sort of\uff0cwhen you go to college\uff0cstudy hard\uff0cand that\u2019s about it. But they never pushed any particular location\uff0cand I think it\u2019s because their worldview was very limited\uff0cand they weren\u2019t that aware in terms of white society\uff0cwhat are all the options. So\uff0cas a result\uff0cI had to find my own resources in terms of financial aid\uff0clook up my own colleges and professions\uff0cand whatever. I think that\u2019s something that I wish I had in terms of how to make decisions\uff0cvocational choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question: As an ABC<\/strong><strong>\uff0cdo you feel inferior and second-class citizens in this country? Do you have an inferiority complex?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I never felt inferior\uff0cyeah\uff0cI never felt I was inferior because I was Chinese\uff0cbecause at least my parents taught us that it\u2019s good to be Chinese\uff0cokay. And I think it helped being Chinese in my particular workplace\uff0cbecause I was in the health field\uff0cI used to be an occupational therapist\uff0cand so I think for certain types of jobs\uff0cthey view Chinese as sort of a model minority\uff0coh yes\uff0cChinese work hard\uff0cand you\u2019re honest\uff0cand you\u2019re bright\uff0cyou know. So\uff0cprobably\uff0cif I was interviewed or another Hispanic or Black person\uff0cit might be marginal\uff0cmaybe I might get\uff0cI don\u2019t really know. But I never felt that in terms of location.<\/p>\n<p>However\uff0cI did feel it in the Chinese church\uff0cbecause it took us so many years to try to get a separate service for ourselves. And once we had the second service\uff0cwe had to go through all the changes\uff0cfor example\uff0cour main service was always at 11 o\u2019clock\uff0cokay. So\uff0cthe decision has to be\uff0cwho\u2019s going to get up earlier\uff0cbecause we only have one sanctuary\uff0cyou know. And so\uff0che says\uff0cwell\uff0cof course\uff0cwell\uff0cyou guys want your service\uff0cyou know\uff0cso our service is at nine o\u2019clock\uff0cyou know. And also\uff0cin terms of selection of deacons and those kinds of things\uff0cthe meetings were very much\uff0cyou know\uff0cheld in Chinese for many years\uff0cand it wasn\u2019t until the first ABC\uff0cand I was sort of like the second ABC\uff0cit was really a struggle\uff0cit was a big struggle\uff0cboard. I\u2019m not quite the first ABC staff\uff0cbut so\uff0cit was really a struggle\uff0cbecause\uff0cyou know\uff0cthe meetings would kind of alternate between English and Chinese\uff0cand a lot of times\uff0cmostly Chinese\uff0cand then you kind of sit there\uff0ckind of wondering what\u2019s really happening.<\/p>\n<p>But I think\uff0cby far\uff0cas you look in terms of a lot of different things\uff0cI think ABCs are still considered secondary. And probably one thing to consider too is that\uff0cat the time when I left\uff0cI left Boston \u201889\uff0cthere was an increasing frustration with the Chinese parents\uff0cbecause the Chinese congregation will always go faster than ABCs\uff0cbecause you have all these immigrants or whatever. And\uff0cbut the ABCs have to take care of the children for Sunday school\uff0cand so your children are left in the hands of us\uff0cyou know\uff0cyoung ABCs\uff0cwho really do not have that much\uff0cyou know\uff0crole models or leadership training or\uff0cyou know\uff0cspiritual maturity\uff0cyou know\uff0cin that sense. We just don\u2019t have a long enough lifespan in terms of ABC Christians\uff0cand it was\uff0cand so\uff0cit\u2019s very frustrating to always try to take care of your children. So\uff0cthat\u2019s something to consider in terms of parental involvement in Sunday school. So\uff0cI think because of that\uff0cwe always feel like we\u2019re always babysitting for the Chinese.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question: Very quick question for the last one<\/strong><strong>\uff0chow did you feel about preparing for this thing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh\uff0cyou have to remind me\uff0coh\uff0cthese parents don\u2019t bite. I felt very insecure\uff0cbecause I\u2019ve never had to face Mandarin-speaking parents\uff0cactually\uff0cI\u2019ve never had to speak in front of any parents. So\uff0cI really wasn\u2019t quite sure\uff0cyou know\uff0cwhether my upbringing\uff0cbeing from the urban area\uff0cfrom a blue-collar family in Chinatown\uff0cand being Teochew\uff0cnice from old country\uff0clike the <em>Joy Luck Club<\/em> kind of stories\uff0cwould be relevant for you or not.
