workshop views with the intellectual challenge from mainland China for the church. \u8fd9\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u62a4\u6559\u7684\u8bb2\u5ea7\u3002This is an apologetics workshop. \u62a4\u6559\u5b66\u4e0d\u662f\u534e\u4eba\u6559\u4f1a\u5e38\u5e38\u6ce8\u91cd\u7684\u4e00\u95e8\u5b66\u95ee\uff0c\u6216\u8005\u4e00\u4e2a\u529f\u8bfe\u3002Apologetics is a field of study that has been pretty much ignored \u00a0or neglected by the Chinese church. \u901a\u5e38\u6211\u4eec\u60f3\u5230\u62a4\u6559\u6211\u4eec\u4e3b\u8981\u662f\u60f3\u5230\u79d1\u5b66\u8bc1\u9053\u3002When we think of apologetics, the first thing we think about might be science and the Christian faith. \u610f\u601d\u5c31\u662f\u8bf4\uff0c\u62ff\u4e00\u4e9b\u8bc1\u636e\u51fa\u6765\u4e3a\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u7684\u4fe1\u4ef0\u4f5c\u4e3a\u8fa9\u62a4\u3002That is to say the furnishing the providing of proofs or evidences for the Christian faith. \u8fd9\u4e2a\u662f\u62a4\u6559\u5b66\u7684\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\u3002That\u2019s part of apologetics.\u53ef\u662f\u90a3\u4e2a\u4e0d\u662f\u62a4\u6559\u7684\u5168\u90e8\u3002But it is not the total or sum of apologetics.<\/p>\n<p>\u6211\u4eec\u8fd9\u6837\u8bf4\u597d\u4e86\uff0cLet me present it this way\uff0c\u4e00\u4e2a\u975e\u4fe1\u5f92\uff0cA non-Christian\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u4eba\u3002is a person.\u8fd9\u4e2a\u4eba\u6709\u4ed6\u7684\u5b87\u5b99\u4eba\u751f\u89c2\u3002This person has his world and life of view.\u5b87\u5b99\u4eba\u751f\u89c2\u3002\u5b87\u5b99\u4eba\u751f\u89c2\u4e5f\u53ef\u4ee5\u8bf4\u662f\u4ed6\u7684\u9884\u8bbe\u3002We can call this his presuppositions.\u8fd9\u4e2a\u9884\u8bbe\u91cc\u9762\u5305\u62ec\u4e00\u4e2a\u4eba\u5bf9\u201c\u5b87\u5b99\u4ece\u54ea\u91cc\u6765\u201d\u3001\u201c\u771f\u7406\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u201d\u8fd9\u4e9b\u95ee\u9898\u7684\u7b54\u6848\u3002The world view of presupposition includes a person\u2019s answers to the questions like where the universe come from and what is the meaning of life.\u662f\u56e0\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u4eba\u6709\u8fd9\u4e9b\u7684\u9884\u8bbe\uff0cBecause of this presuppositions\uff0c\u4eba\u6709\u4e00\u4e9b\u7684\u4fe1\u5ff5\u3002a person has convictions.\u6bd4\u65b9\u8bf4\uff0c\u4ed6\u8ba4\u4e3a\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u662f\u5e1d\u56fd\u4e3b\u4e49\u7684\u5de5\u5177\u3002For example, a conviction may be that Christianity is a tool of imperialism.\u8fd9\u4e2a\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u77e5\u8bc6\u4efd\u5b50\u5f88\u666e\u904d\u6709\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u4fe1\u5ff5\u3002It\u2019s a very common conviction of mainland Chinese intellectuals.\u53ef\u662f\u8fd9\u4e2a\u4fe1\u5ff5\u7684\u80cc\u540e\u6709\u4ed6\u7684\u9884\u8bbe\u3002You see that behind convictions are presuppositions.\u9884\u8bbe\u5c31\u662f\u4ed6\u7684\u5b87\u5b99\u4eba\u751f\u89c2\u3002That is to say the world and life view of a person. \u5728\u8fd9\u4e2a\u4fe1\u5ff5\u7684\u5c42\u9762\uff0c\u5e38\u5e38\u6211\u4eec\u4fe1\u5f92\u4e0e\u975e\u4fe1\u5f92\u4f1a\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u7684\u4e89\u8fa9\u3002It is at the level of convictions that the Christian and non-Christian has all kind of arguments or debate. \u53ef\u662f\u5047\u5982\u6211\u4eec\u4e86\u89e3\u4e00\u4e2a\u4eba\u80cc\u540e\u7684\u5b87\u5b99\u4eba\u751f\u89c2\u7684\u8bdd, But if we understand the world and life view behind the convictions, \u90a3\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u62a4\u6559\u7684\u4efb\u52a1\u5c31\u5f88\u6e05\u695a\u3002then the task of the apologetics becomes very clear.<\/p>\n<p>\u62a4\u6559\u6709\u4e24\u4e2a\u4efb\u52a1\u3002Apologetics have a twofold task. \u7b2c\u4e00\u662f\u6b63\u9762\u7684\uff0cFirst is positive, \u7b2c\u4e8c\u662f\u8d1f\u9762\u7684\u3002the second, negative. \u6b63\u9762\u7684\u662f\u5ba3\u8bb2\u771f\u7406\u3002Positively\uff0c apologetics proclaims the truth of the Bible.\u8d1f\u9762\u7684\u662f\u8981\u63ed\u9732\u4e00\u4e2a\u975e\u4fe1\u5f92\u7684\u5b87\u5b99\u4eba\u751f\u89c2\u3002The negative task is to expose the non-Christian\u2019s presuppositions.<\/p>\n<p>\u6211\u4e3e\u4e00\u4e2a\u4f8b\u3002Let me give you an example. \u6bd4\u65b9\u8bf4\u4e00\u4e2a\u57fa\u7763\u5f92\u4ed6\u6709\u4e24\u4e2a\u4fe1\u5ff5\u6216\u8005\u9884\u8bbe\u7684\u4e24\u90e8\u5206\uff1aFor example, a Christian has 2 basic presuppositions\uff1a\u7b2c\u4e00\uff0c\u4eba\u662f\u6709\u9650\u7684\uff0cMan is limited\uff0c\u4eba\u7684\u7406\u6027\u662f\u6709\u9650\u7684\u3002man\u2019s reason is limited.\u53ef\u662f\u53e6\u5916\u4e00\u4e2a\u9884\u8bbe\uff0cBut the second part of the presuppositions\uff0c\u6216\u8005\u8bf4\u8fd9\u4e2a\u9884\u6d4b\u7684\u53e6\u5916\u4e00\u8fb9\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u8bf4\uff1a\u4eba\u53ef\u4ee5\u77e5\u9053\uff0c<em>man can know<\/em> is the second half\uff0c\u4eba\u53ef\u4ee5\u8ba4\u8bc6\u771f\u7406\uff0cman can know the truth\uff0c\u4eba\u53ef\u4ee5\u8ba4\u8bc6\u795e\u3002man can know God. \u8fd9\u53e5\u8bdd\u73b0\u5728\u572821\u4e16\u7eaa\u8bb2\u4e0d\u7b80\u5355\u7684\u3002This is not a simple statement we take for granted in the 21th century. \u56e0\u4e3a\u572821\u4e16\u7eaa\u540e\u73b0\u4ee3\u7684\u89e3\u6784\u4e3b\u4e49\u7406\u5ff5\uff0cIn the post-modern philosophy of deconstructionism\uff0c\u89e3\u6784\u4e3b\u4e49\u8bf4\uff0c\u4e00\u672c\u4e66\uff0cit says\uff0ca book\u4e00\u4e2a\u6587\u672c, \u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u7684\u4f5c\u8005\u662f\u4e0d\u5b58\u5728\u7684\u3002the author does not exist. \u610f\u601d\u5c31\u662f\u8bf4\u4f60\u4e0d\u53ef\u4ee5\u53bb\u627e\u5230\u90a3\u4e2a\u4f5c\u8005\u539f\u6765\u7684\u610f\u601d\u3002You cannot find the original meaning or intention of the author. \u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u4e5f\u4e0d\u5b58\u5728\u3002The text does not exist.\u56e0\u4e3a\u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u4e1c\u897f\u5462? What is the book? \u6587\u672c\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u5462\uff1f\u6587\u672c\u662f\uff0c\u4f60\u8bfb\u8fdb\u53bb\u4ec0\u4e48\u610f\u601d\u5c31\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u3002The text is the interpretation. \u6ca1\u6709\u4e8b\u5b9e\uff0cNo fact, \u53ea\u6709\u89e3\u91ca\u3002only interpretation.\u8fd9\u4e9b\u90fd\u662f\u6700\u70ed\u95e8\u73b0\u5728\u8bb2\u7684\u4e00\u4e9b\u9898\u76ee\u3002This is the most fashionable philosophy today. \u7b2c\u4e09\uff0c\u8bfb\u8005\u4e5f\u6ca1\u6709\u3002The reader does not exist. \u6211\u4e0d\u5b58\u5728\u3002\u6211\u5728\u89e3\u91ca\u8fd9\u4e2a\u6587\u672c\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0cwhen I interpret the text,\u6211\u662f\u8fd9\u4e2a\u89e3\u91ca\u7fa4\u4f53\u7684\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\u800c\u5df2\uff0cI am only a part of the member of the interpretative community, the hermeneutic community.\u610f\u601d\u5c31\u662f\u8bf4\uff0c\u662f\u73b0\u4eca\u7684\u793e\u4f1a\uff0cIn another word, the contemporary society\uff0c\u5728\u89e3\u91ca\u4e00\u672c\u4e66\u7684\u610f\u4e49\u3002is interpreting the meaning of the text.\u800c\u8fd9\u4e2a\u89e3\u91ca\u672c\u8eab\u5c31\u662f\u90a3\u4e2a\u6587\u672c\u3002The interpretation itself is the text. \u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u4e0d\u5b58\u5728\uff0cThe book does not exist, \u8fd9\u4e2a\u4f5c\u8005\u4e5f\u4e0d\u5b58\u5728\uff0cthe author does not exist, and I don\u2019t exist.\u6211\u4e5f\u4e0d\u5b58\u5728\u3002\u90a3\u5f53\u7136\u4e0d\u662f\u8bf4\u6211\u8fd9\u4e2a\u4eba\u4e0d\u5b58\u5728\uff0c\u4e43\u662f\u8bf4\u6211\u6ca1\u6709\u53ef\u80fd\u77e5\u9053\u8fd9\u672c\u4e66\u7684\u610f\u4e49\uff0cIn other word, I cannot know what the text means. \u73b0\u5728\u6682\u65f6\u8bb2\u5230\u8fd9\u91cc\uff0c\u540e\u73b0\u4ee3\u7684\u89e3\u6784\u4e3b\u4e49\u3002We will say so much just for now on the deconstructionism.<\/p>\n<p>\u57fa\u7763\u5f92\u76f8\u4fe1\uff0cChristians believe\uff0c\u7406\u6027\u662f\u6709\u9650\u7684\u3002reason is limited.\u8fd9\u4e2a\u4e5f\u662f\u540e\u73b0\u4ee3\u7684\u89e3\u6784\u4e3b\u4e49\u8981\u544a\u8bc9\u6211\u4eec\u7684\uff0cDeconstructionism wants to tell us that, \u4e0d\u8fc7\u6211\u4eec\u8001\u65e9\u5c31\u77e5\u9053\u4e86\u3002but any true Christian knows this from the very beginning of the faith.\u53ef\u662f\u6211\u4eec\u57fa\u7763\u5f92\u7684\u4fe1\u5ff5\u53e6\u5916\u4e00\u8fb9\uff0cHowever the other side of the Christian presupposition\uff0c\u662f\u6211\u80fd\u77e5\u9053I can know, \u6211\u80fd\u77e5\u9053\u771f\u7406\uff0cI can know the truth, \u6211\u80fd\u77e5\u9053\u795e\uff0cI can know God\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u795e\u3002because God exists.\u795e\u662f\u65e0\u6240\u4e0d\u77e5\u7684\u3002God knows everything.\u795e\u65e0\u6240\u4e0d\u77e5, \u6240\u77e5\u9053\u7684\u90fd\u662f\u900f\u77e5\u7684\u3002All that God knows\uff0cGod knows everything about that. \u610f\u601d\u5c31\u662f\u8bf4\uff0c\u795e\u662f\u65e0\u6240\u4e0d\u77e5\uff0c\u795e\u6240\u77e5\uff0c\u795e\u90fd\u900f\u77e5\u3002God knows everything\uff0cand God knows everything that there is to know about everything that there is to know. \u800c\u795e\u6240\u900f\u77e5\u7684\u4e07\u7269\u91cc\u9762\uff0c\u4ed6\u9009\u62e9\u4e86\u53bb\u542f\u793a\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\u7ed9\u4eba\u7c7b\u3002And out of the everything that God knows about everything that God knows He has chosen to reveal a part to mankind. \u65e2\u7136\u795e\u5728\u6c38\u6052\u91cc\u9762\u5df2\u7ecf\u9009\u62e9\u4e86\u5728\u4ed6\u7684\u6c38\u6052\u65e8\u610f\u91cc\u9762\u53bb\u542f\u793a\uff0cSince God has chosen in his eternal plan of decree to reveal himself\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u4eba\u6709\u8fd9\u4e2a\u53ef\u80fd\u53bb\u77e5\u9053\uff0ctherefore man can know\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u6709\u628a\u63e1\u5730\u77e5\u9053\uff0cman can certainly\uff0cassuredly know, \u4eba\u53ef\u4ee5\u6e05\u695a\u5730\u77e5\u9053\uff0cman can clearly know\uff0c\u4eba\u6240\u77e5\u9053\u7684\u90fd\u662f\u6709\u9650\u7684\uff0cman knows only in a limited way, \u4eba\u6240\u77e5\u9053\u4efb\u4f55\u4e8b\u60c5\u90fd\u662f\u6709\u9650\u7684\u77e5\u9053\u3002Of all things that man knows man knows in the limited way. \u53ef\u662f\u4ed6\u662f\u6e05\u695a\u7684\u3001\u6709\u628a\u63e1\u7684\u77e5\u9053\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u6309\u7167\u795e\u7684\u65e8\u610f\u56de\u5e94\u795e\u7684\u65e8\u610f\uff0c\u795e\u7684\u542f\u793a\u3002But as we respond properly to God\u2019s revelation\uff0cwe can know clearly and certainly.\u8fd9\u4e24\u4e2a\u662f\u57fa\u7763\u5f92\u7684\u9884\u8bbe\u3002This two are Christians\u2019 presupposition.<\/p>\n<p>\u597d\u4e86\uff0c\u975e\u57fa\u7763\u5f92\u5462\uff0cnon-Christians\uff0c \u4ed6\u4eec\u4e5f\u6709\u4ed6\u4eec\u7684\u9884\u8bbe\u3002\u867d\u7136\u6709\u7684\u65f6\u5019\u4ed6\u4eec\u4e0d\u5f88\u6e05\u695a\u5730\u610f\u8bc6\u5230\u4ed6\u4eec\u7684\u9884\u8bbe\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u4e1c\u897f\u3002Sometimes non-Christian is not very conscious of what it is that he or she presupposes.\u6bd4\u65b9\u8bf4\uff0c\u4e3e\u4e2a\u4f8b\u5b50\uff0c\u4ed6\u4f1a\u9884\u8bbe\uff0cA non-Christian may presuppose that\uff0c\u4eba\u5c31\u662f\u771f\u7406\u7684\u51c6\u5219man is the norm of truth, \u4eba\u662f\u771f\u7406\u7684\u7edd\u5bf9\u7684\u51c6\u5219\u3002man is the absolute norm of truth. \u8fd9\u4e2a\u5728\u73b0\u4ee3\u7684\u54f2\u5b66\u91cc\u9762\u7528\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u5f62\u5f0f\u8868\u73b0\u3002This is manifested in different ways in modern philosophy. \u6bd4\u65b9\u8bf4\u7406\u6027\u4e3b\u4e49\uff0c17\u4e16\u7eaa\u7684\uff0cRationalism in 17th century, \u4eba\u7684\u7406\u6027\u6765\u5224\u65ad\u795e\u7684\u542f\u793a\u662f\u4e0d\u662f\u5408\u4e4e\u7406\u6027\u3002man\u2019s reason determines or judges whether the revelation from God is reasonable.18\u4e16\u7eaa\u7684\u7ecf\u9a8c\u4e3b\u4e49\uff0cEmpiricism in 18th century\uff0c\u4eba\u7684\u4e94\u5b98\u3001\u79d1\u5b66\u3001\u5b9e\u9a8c\uff0cman\u2019s sense perception and experimentation and the sense data that he perceives and conceives, \u8fd9\u4e9b\u662f\u771f\u7406\u7684\u51c6\u5219\u3002these are the norm of truth. 19\u4e16\u7eaa\uff0c19th century, \u4eba\u7684\u4e3b\u89c2\u7684\u611f\u89c9\uff0cman\u2019s subjectivity\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u4e86\u771f\u7406\u7684\u51c6\u5219\uff0cbecomes the norm of truth\uff0c\u7b49\u7b49\u3002etc.<\/p>\n<p>\u597d\uff0c\u4e0d\u8fc7\u4e00\u4e2a\u4eba\u8bf4\u660e\u4e86\u4ed6\u662f\u4e07\u7269\u771f\u7406\u7684\u51c6\u5219\u4e4b\u540c\u65f6\uff0cBut at the same time that man takes himself as the absolute norm of truth, \u4eba\u4e5f\u540c\u65f6\u627f\u8ba4\uff0cman at the same time acknowledges\uff0c\u771f\u7406\u662f\u76f8\u5bf9\u7684\uff0cthat truth is relative, \u4eba\u4e5f\u662f\u76f8\u5bf9\u7684\uff0cman is relative,\u4eba\u4e0d\u662f\u7edd\u5bf9\u7684\u3002man is not absolute.\u5728\u5b58\u5728\u4e3b\u4e49\u7684\u53d1\u5c55\u7684\u8fc7\u7a0b\u91cc\u9762\uff0cAnd as existentialism developed\uff0c19\u4e16\u7eaa\u4e00\u76f4\u523020\u4e16\u7eaa\uff0cfrom 19th century to the 20th century, \u8fd9\u4e2a\u771f\u7406\u7684\u76f8\u5bf9\u6027\uff0cthe truth is relative\uff0c\u518d\u8fdb\u4e00\u6b65\u53d8\u6210\u5b87\u5b99\u662f\u6ca1\u6709\u7406\u6027\u7684\uff0cit takes us extra step and this newer presupposition is that the universe is irrational, \u6216\u8005\u8bf4\u8fd9\u4e16\u754c\u662f\u8352\u8c2c\u7684\u3002that the world is absurd. \u8bb2\u5230\u5b87\u5b99\u662f\u8352\u8c2c\u7684\uff0cWhen we get to this point that the universe is absurd\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u5c31\u8fbe\u5230\u5f53\u4ee3\u4e2d\u56fd\u5927\u9646\u77e5\u8bc6\u5206\u5b50\u7684\u601d\u6f6e\u4e86\u3002we are now talking about the contemporary mainland Chinese intellectuals trend of thought. \u6240\u4ee5\u8fd9\u4e2a\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u62a4\u6559\u7684\u8bb2\u5ea7\u3002We are dealing with the apologetics\u3002<\/p>\n<p>\u6211\u518d\u89e3\u91ca\u4e00\u4e0b\u8fd9\u4e2a\u62a4\u6559\u7684\u610f\u4e49\u3002Let me continue with the definition of have eliminated apologetics.\u5269\u4e0b\u7684\u662f\u5b97\u6559\u7684\u54f2\u5b66\uff0cThe philosophy of religion is what\u2019s left, \u6216\u8005\u662f\u5b97\u6559\u4e0e\u54f2\u5b66\u3002or philosophy and religion.\u6709\u4e9b\u795e\u5b66\u9662\u5c31\u5766\u767d\u5730\u627f\u8ba4\uff0cSome seminaries honestly confess, \u6211\u4eec\u4e5f\u6ca1\u6709\u4e1c\u897f\u8981\u8fa9\u62a4\u3002there is nothing to defend any Why? \u56e0\u4e3a\u6211\u4eec\u4eca\u5929\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u5927\u9646\u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u5f88\u7279\u522b\u7684\u73b0\u8c61\uff0cBecause we are facing a very unique phenomenon, \u8fd9\u4e2a\u73b0\u8c61\u5c31\u662f\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u5927\u9646\u6709\u4e00\u6279\u7684\u77e5\u8bc6\u4efd\u5b50\u3002and the phenomenon is that in mainland China, there is a group of intellectuals.\u5f53\u6211\u4eec\u8bf4\u77e5\u8bc6\u4efd\u5b50\uff0c\u662f\u6307\u6240\u6709\u6709\u4e2d\u5b66\u6bd5\u4e1a\u7684\u5c31\u662f\u77e5\u8bc6\u4efd\u5b50\u3002The word intellectual means anybody who has graduated from high school.\u4e0d\u8fc7\u7279\u522b\u5728\u8fd9\u4e2a\u77e5\u8bc6\u5206\u5b50\u91cc\u9762\u6709\u4e00\u7fa4\u662f\u5ff5\u6587\u79d1\u7684\uff0cBut particularly among these intellectuals there is a smaller group in the humanities\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u5916\u8bed\u7684foreign history.\u8fd9\u4e00\u6279\u7684\u77e5\u8bc6\u4efd\u5b50,\u4e5f\u5c31\u662f\u8bf4\u5927\u5b66\u91cc\u9762\u7684\u8bb2\u5e08These intellectuals that\u2019s to say university professors, \u8fd8\u6709\u4e00\u4e9b\u56fd\u5bb6\u6240\u8bbe\u7acb\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u6240\u91cc\u9762\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u5458\u6216\u8005\u662f\u4f5c\u5bb6\u3002and also researchers who work in the state-run\uff0cthe government-run research institute or authors in a writing institutes that the government operates.<\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u8fd9\u4e2a\u8303\u56f4\u91cc\u9762Within this realm\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u8bf4\u6587\u79d1\u7684\u6559\u6388\u8ddf\u4f5c\u8005\uff0cthat is humanities the professors and authors, \u6709\u4e00\u4e2a\u5f88\u7279\u522b\u7684\u73b0\u8c61\uff0cthere is a unique phenomenon,\u5c31\u662f\u8bf4\u4ed6\u4eec\u4e2d\u95f4\u6709\u597d\u4e9b\u5728\u63a8\u4ecb\u57fa\u7763\u6559\uff0cmany of them are now advocating Christianity\uff0c\u4ed6\u4eec\u6210\u4e3a\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u63a8\u4ecb\u8005\u3002they become promoters of Christianity in mainland China. \u8fd9\u4e9b\u4ed6\u4eec\u6240\u51fa\u7248\u7684\u4e66\uff0cSome of the books they are publishing, \u5dee\u4e0d\u591a\u6ca1\u6709\u4e00\u672c\u662f\u798f\u97f3\u6d3e\u7684\u3002almost not one is what we might call evangelical.\u8fd9\u4e9b\u4e66, \u4ed6\u4eec\u5df2\u7ecf\u51fa\u7248\u4e86\u5927\u698280\u5230100\u672c\u4e86\u3002These books are now published about 80-100 volumes of them already in China\u3002\u4ed6\u4eec\u5fc3\u76ee\u4e2d\u7684\u57fa\u7763\u6559\uff0cIn their mind what is Christianity\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u5386\u53f2\u3001\u6587\u5316\u3001\u793e\u4f1a\u4e0a\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u5236\u5ea6\uff0cChristianity is the historic\uff0c cultural and social institution, \u662f\u5728\u65f6\u95f4\u7a7a\u95f4\u91cc\u9762\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u56e2\u4f53,\u6216\u8005\u4e00\u4e2a\u5236\u5ea6\u3002that\u2019s to say Christianity is an organization and institution existing in time and space. we evangelical prefer to think of the church as the body of Christ a living organism.\u6211\u4eec\u8bf4\u6559\u4f1a\u4e0d\u662f\u7ec4\u7ec7\uff0cWe say that church is not an organization, \u662f\u6709\u673a\u4f53\u548c\u8eab\u4f53\u3002it is a organism, not a organization.\u53ef\u662f\u8fd9\u4e2a\u6b63\u6b63\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u5927\u9646\u77e5\u8bc6\u5206\u5b50\u73b0\u5728\u5bf9\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u4ed6\u4eec\u7684\u770b\u6cd5\u3002However\uff0cthis is exactly how mainland Chinese intellectuals look at Christianity today.\u4ed6\u4eec\u770b\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u662f\u5728\u65f6\u95f4\u3001\u7a7a\u95f4\u91cc\u9762\u7684\u4e00\u4e2a\u5236\u5ea6\u3002Christianity is an institution in space and time.<\/p>\n<p>\u597d\uff0c\u7136\u540e\u5462,\u4ed6\u4eec\u5728\u63a8\u4ecb\u57fa\u7763\u6559\uff0c\u8ba4\u4e3a\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u7684\u601d\u60f3\u3001\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u7684\u6587\u5316\u6b63\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u76ee\u524d\u8ddf\u5c06\u6765\u6240\u9700\u8981\u7684\u3002They are advocating that Christian thought and Christian culture is exactly what China needs now and in the immediate future. \u8fd9\u4e2a\u5c31\u662f\u4eca\u5929\u4e3b\u8981\u7684\u8bb2\u9898\u3002This is the main theme or the main thesis of our workshop this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>\u8ba9\u6211\u5148\u7ed9\u5927\u5bb6\u4e00\u4e2a\u5386\u53f2\u7684\u56de\u987e\u3002Let me first give you a historical overview.<\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u8fd1\u4ee3\u53f2\u91cc\u9762\uff0cIn modern Chinese history, \u6709\u51e0\u6bb5\u7684\u5386\u53f2\uff0cthere are several historical periods,\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u77e5\u8bc6\u5206\u5b50\u5728\u8fd9\u51e0\u4e2a\u9636\u6bb5\u91cc\u9762\u662f\u7279\u522b\u7684\u53cd\u5bf9\u653b\u51fb\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u7684\u3002during these historical periods mainland Chinese intellectuals fiercely opposed and attacked Christianity.<\/p>\n<p>\u7b2c\u4e00\u4e2a\u9636\u6bb5\u662f1862-72 \u540c\u6cbb\u4e2d\u5174\uff0cThe first period is during the Tongzhi restoration in 1862-1874. \u4e2d\u56fd\u521a\u521a\u8f93\u4e86\u4e24\u573a\u7684\u9e26\u7247\u6218\u4e89\uff0cChina had just lost 2 Opium Wars,1839-42, 1856-60.\u6148\u79a7\u592a\u540e\u5728\u8fd9\u4e2a\u65f6\u5019\u5f00\u59cb\u638c\u6743\u3002During this period from 1862\uff0cthe empress dowager begins to really control China\u2019s court.\u8fd9\u4e2a\u9636\u6bb5\u91cc,\u6709\u5b98\u65b9\u7684\u653b\u51fb\u57fa\u7763\u6559\uff0cDuring this period\uff0cofficials, government officials apposed Christianity, \u4e5f\u6709\u58eb\u5927\u592b\u65b9\u9762\u7684\u53cd\u5bf9\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u3002and secondly the gentry, the landowning intellectuals, scholars also opposed Christianity.\u5b98\u65b9\u600e\u4e48\u53cd\u5bf9\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u5462\uff1fHow did the officials oppose Christianity? \u4e3b\u8981\u90fd\u662f\u4e00\u4e9b\u7684\u6559\u6848\u3002This is through most what is called missionary cases.<\/p>\n<p>\u6bd4\u65b9\u8bf4\u4e00\u4e2a\u5ba3\u6559\u58eb\u5728\u5730\u65b9\u4e0a\u95ef\u4e86\u7978\uff0c\u53d1\u751f\u4e86\u95ee\u9898\u3002For example, there\u2019s a conflict on the local level that a missionary initiated.\u6bd4\u65b9\u4ed6\u79df\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u8d27\u4ed3\uff0cFor example, the missionary rented a warehouse, \u4f46\u8fd9\u4e2a\u8d27\u4ed3\u662f\u5b54\u5b50\u7684\u51fa\u751f\u5730\u3002but the warehouse was turned out to be\u00a0 Confucius birthplace.\u90a3\u5c31\u6709\u4eba\u4f1a\u6765\u544a\u4ed6\u4eec\u3002So a law suit and suit.\u4f46\u662f\u90a3\u4e2a\u8859\u95e8\u53d7\u4e0a\u9762\u7684\u6307\u793a\uff0c\u4e0d\u80fd\u600e\u4e48\u7f5a\u8fd9\u6d0b\u4eba\u7684\u3002However\uff0cthe magistrate gets an order from above that Lushiqiang has written the one of the early definitive books on Chinese opposition of Christianity. \u82f1\u6587\u662fPaul Cohen\u2019s <em>China and Christianity<\/em><em>. <\/em>Paul Cohen\u7684\u4e66\u662f\u82f1\u6587\u65b9\u9762\u6bd4\u8f83\u6709\u6743\u5a01\u7684\u8457\u4f5c\u3002\u58eb\u5927\u592b\u901a\u5e38\u4f1a\u5728\u90a3\u4e9b\u79d1\u4e3e\u8003\u8bd5\u7684\u90a3\u4e2a\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u5c31\u53d1\u5f88\u591a\u7684\u4f20\u5355\uff0c\u653b\u51fb\u57fa\u7763\u6559\uff0cThe gentry might passed out leaflet packets against Christianity during the civil service examination times at provincial capital.\u5728\u4e00\u4e2a\u7701\u4f1a\u7684\u5730\u65b9\uff0c\u7b49\u7b49\u3002<\/p>\n<p>\u90a3\u7b2c\u4e8c\u6b21\u53cd\u6559\uff0cThe second period of opposition to Christianity\uff0c\u662f1915-1927, is the period from 1915 to 1927 \uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u79f0\u8fd9\u6bb5\u65f6\u671f\u53eb\u505a\u4e94\u56db\u8fd0\u52a8\u3002we called this period the May 4th movement. \u6211\u7684\u8bba\u6587\u5c31\u662f\u8bb2\u5230\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u600e\u4e48\u6837\u56de\u5e94\u8fd9\u4e2a\u4e94\u56db\u8fd0\u52a8\u65f6\u671f\u7684\u975e\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u8fd0\u52a8\u3002My own doctoral dissertation deals with how Christianity responded when Christianity was attacked by non-Christians. \u5728\u540e\u9762\u6211\u5e26\u4e86\u4e00\u4e9b\u6765\u3002I brought some in the back for intellectuals\uff0cwhat is Christianity? \u57fa\u7763\u6559\u7b2c\u4e00\u662f\u4e0d\u5408\u4e4e\u7406\u6027\u7684\uff0cFirst of all\uff0cChristianity was unreasonable, \u7b2c\u4e8c\uff0csecondly, \u57fa\u7763\u6559\u662f\u5e1d\u56fd\u4e3b\u4e49\u7684\u5de5\u5177\u3002secondly, Christianity was the tool of imperialism.\u6211\u4eec\u5047\u5982\u6bd4\u8f83\u4e00\u4e0b1860\u5e74\u4ee3\u8ddf1920\u5e74\u4ee3\u53cd\u6559\u7684\u539f\u56e0\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u770b\u89c1\u4e00\u4e2a\u5f88\u6709\u8da3\u7684\u6539\u53d8\u3002If we compare how intellectuals opposed Christianity in 1860s on the one hand and how intellectuals opposed Christianity in 1920s on the other hand, you will find a very important difference. \u57281860\u5e74\u4ee3\uff0cDuring the 1860s, \u53cd\u6559\u7684\u672c\u4f4d\uff0cthe point of departure or anti-Christian attack\uff0c\u662f\u6211\u4eec\u662f\u4f20\u7edf\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba\uff0cwe are traditional Chinese,\u5112\u5bb6\u3001\u9053\u5bb6\u3001\u4f5b\u6559\u5c31\u8054\u624b\u4e86\uff0c\u5f88\u6709\u8da3\u7684\uff0cvery interestingly Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism joined hands\uff0cattacked foreigners. \u53cd\u5bf9\u6d0b\u4eba\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u662f\u4ece\u4e00\u4e2a\u4f20\u7edf\u4e2d\u56fd\u6587\u5316\u7684\u89d2\u5ea6\u88ab\u653b\u51fb\u4e3a\u4e00\u4e2a\u6d0b\u6559\u3002So Christianity was attacked from the point of departure of traditional Chinese culture and Christianity was attacked as a foreign religion.<\/p>\n<p>\u53ef\u662f1920\u5e74\u4ee3\u5c31\u5b8c\u5168\u4e0d\u4e00\u6837\u3002But totally different was the 1920s anti-Christian movement. \u975e\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u8fd0\u52a8, \u57281920\u5e74\u4ee3\u53cd\u5bf9\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u7684\u65f6\u5019, \u4ed6\u4eec\u7684\u672c\u4f4d\u662f\u73b0\u4ee3\u6027\uff0cThe point of departure of the anti-Christian movement in the1920s is modernity, \u521a\u597d\u8ddf1860\u662f\u76f8\u53cd\u7684\uff0ctotally different opposite to the 1860s point of departure. \u56e0\u4e3a\u5112\u5bb6\u5df2\u7ecf\u5d29\u6e83\u4e86\u3002Confucianism collapsed.1905\u5e74\uff0c\u79d1\u4e3e\u5236\u5ea6\u53d6\u6d88\u4e86\uff0cThe confusion civil service examination system was abolished\uff0c1908\u5e74\u6148\u79a7\u592a\u540e\u53bb\u4e16\uff0cin 1908\uff0cthe Empress Dowager died, 1911\u5e74\u5149\u660e\u9769\u547d\u3002 1911, the overthrow of dynasty, the nationalist revolution. \u6240\u4ee5\u57281911\u5e74\u4e4b\u540e, So after the revolution in 1911\uff0c\u4e2d\u56fd\u77e5\u8bc6\u5206\u5b50\u5728\u5bfb\u627e\u4e00\u4e2a\u65b0\u7684\u5b87\u5b99\u4eba\u751f\u89c2\uff0cChinese intellectuals after 1911 were searching for a new world and life view. \u6240\u4ee5\u4e94\u56db\u8fd0\u52a8\u662f\u4e00\u4e2a\u975e\u5e38\u53cd\u4f20\u7edf\u7684\u65f6\u671f\u3002So the May 4th period was an anti-traditional period of thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u4e0d\u662f\u8bf4\u8fd9\u6bb5\u65f6\u671f\u6ca1\u6709\u4f5b\u6559\u7684\u5b66\u8005\u8ddf\u5112\u5bb6\u7684\u5b66\u8005\u4e3a\u4f5b\u6559\u8ddf\u5112\u5bb6\u8fa9\u62a4\uff0c\u6709\u7684\u3002This
