It is well known that Reformed theology has a distinctive doctrine of Scripture. \u2026 it has an equally distinctive doctrine of natural revelation.<\/p>\n

The distinctive character of the natural theology of the Westminster Confession may be most clearly brought to view if we show how intimately it is interwoven with the Confession\u2019s doctrine of Scripture.\u00a0\u00a0 And this may perhaps be most easily accomplished if it is noted that, just as the Confession\u2019s doctrine of Scripture may be set forth under definite notions of its necessity, its authority, its sufficiency and its perspicuity, so the Confession\u2019s doctrine of revelation in nature may be set forth under corresponding notions of necessity, authority, sufficiency and perspicuity.<\/p>\n

WCF: SCRIPTURE SPEAKS TO SINNERS RE. COVENANT<\/strong><\/p>\n

GOD ORIGINALLY PLACED MAN ON EARTH UNDER COVENANT OF WORKS <\/strong><\/p>\n

MAN BROKE COVENANT OF WORKS; GOD MADE SECOND COVENANT FOR SALVATION; THUS:<\/strong><\/p>\n

WE CAN SAY: SCRIPTURE = WRITTEN EXPRESSION OF GOD\u2019S COVENANT RELATIONSHIP WITH MAN<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the Confession, Scripture speaks to sinners in terms of a covenant.\u00a0 It tells us that man was originally placed on earth under the terms of the covenant of works.\u00a0 It informs us further that\u00a0 man broke this covenant of works and that God was pleased to make a second covenant with men that they might be saved.\u00a0 Thus Scripture may be sad to be the written expression of God\u2019s covenant relationship with man.<\/p>\n

\u4ece\u300e\u7ea6\u300f\u770b\u300a\u5723\u7ecf\u300b\u7684\u56db\u4e2a\u5c5e\u6027<\/strong><\/p>\n

SCRIPTURE\u2019S FOUR ATTRIBUTES RE. COVENANT<\/strong><\/p>\n

The four characteristics of Scripture enumerated above may now be regarded in relation to this general covenant concept.<\/p>\n

[1]<\/strong>\u300a\u5723\u7ecf\u300b\u7684\u5fc5\u987b\u6027\uff1a\u4eba\u8fdd\u80cc\u4e86\u884c\u4e3a\u4e4b\u7ea6\uff1b\u4ed6\u9700\u8981\u4e0a\u5e1d\u7684\u6069\u5178<\/strong><\/p>\n

NECESSITY OF SCRIPTURE: MAN BROKE COVENANT OF WORKS; THUS NEEDS GOD\u2019S GRACE<\/strong><\/p>\n

The necessity of Scripture lies in the p. 265 fact that man has broken the covenant of works.\u00a0 He therefore needs the grace of God.<\/p>\n

\u81ea\u7136\u754c\u4e0d\u8bf4\u8bdd\uff0c\u5e76\u4e0d\u63d0\u4f9b\u300e\u6069\u5178\u7684\u77e5\u8bc6\u300f\uff1b<\/strong>\u4e0a\u5e1d\u8fc1\u5c31\u4eba\uff0c\u85c9\u300a\u5723\u7ecf\u300b\u542f\u793a\u300e\u6069\u5178\u7684\u77e5\u8bc6\u300f<\/strong><\/p>\n

NO SPEECH, OR KNOWLEDGE OF GRACE IN NATURE<\/strong><\/p>\n

GOD CONDESCENDED TO REVEAL KNOWLEDGE OF GRACE IN SCRIPTURE<\/strong><\/p>\n

There is no speech or knowledge of grace in nature.\u00a0 God has accordingly condescended to reveal it in Scripture.<\/p>\n

The revelation of grace can be seen for what it is only if it is seen in its own light.\u00a0 The light of grace outshines in its brilliance the light of nature, as the sun outshines the moon.<\/p>\n

\u4f46\u662f\uff0c\u5728\u300a\u5723\u7ecf\u300b\u91cc\u8bf4\u8bdd\u7684\u4e0a\u5e1d\uff0c\u5fc5\u7136\u662f\u6839\u636e\u7942\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u6743\u67c4\u8bf4\u8bdd\u7684<\/strong><\/p>\n

The kind of God that speaks in Scripture can speak only on his own authority.\u00a0 So the authority of Scripture is as basic as its necessity.<\/p>\n

THUS: \u201cLIGHT OF NATURE\u201d SHINES ONLY BY REFLECTING LIGHT OF GRACE<\/strong><\/p>\n

To this necessity and authority there must be added the sufficiency or finality of Scripture.<\/p>\n

When the sun of grace has arisen on the horizon of the sinner, the \u201clight of nature\u201d shines only by reflected light.<\/p>\n

A further point needs to be noted.\u00a0 God did not give his prohibition so that man might be obedient merely with respect to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and that merely at one particular moment in time.<\/p>\n

He gave the prohibition so that man might learn to be self-consciously obedient in all that he did with respect to all things and throughout all time.<\/p>\n

Man\u2019s act with respect to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was to be but an example to himself of what he should or should not do with respect to all other trees.<\/p>\n

Nature, as it were, yearns to be released from its imprisonment in order once more to be united to her Lord in fruitful union.\u00a0 When nature is abused by man, it cries out to p. 276 her creator for vengeance and through it for redemption.<\/p>\n

AS INDEPENDENT OF GOD\u2019S SUPERNATURAL REVELATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

He that should come was to bruise the head of the serpent, the one that led man in setting up nature as independent of the supernatural revelation of God.<\/p>\n

The \u201cgood,\u201d that is, the believers, are, generally, hedged about by God.\u00a0\u00a0 Yet they must not expect that always and in every respect this will be the case.<\/p>\n
